Butoh-Ritual Dance

daflew
Mizu is a portland Butoh performance artist and in this rare interview she talks about her craft, and her community. This is a local homegrown production with a track from our very own Solovox.
Butoh is an enigma, an ever-evolving mystery. Violent or peaceful, slow or manic, painfully intimate or grandly spectacular, freely improvised or choreographed in stylized gestures, Butoh seems to fly away from itself, resisting definition or explanation, yet profoundly transforming those who encounter it.

    • Really nice job. Well edited and put together.
Lighting is a bit hot on the interview but excellent on the dance and other B-Roll. In the same respect if you were going for the light/dark effect on the face, the lighting should have been down on both sides. The story is so strong, it's easy to overlook the technical, which is the only thing that sets this apart from a Broadcast shoot. Kudos!!!! GL! Keepem' Coming!!!

    • I am so jazzed to see an artist such as Mizu here in Portland. She is inspiring, articulate and approachable.
The video is good at showing all the different elements in a short time.

    • I am always eager to learn about different kinds of art form and expression. Thanks for contributing to that. This piece is very informative, and was put together very professionally. Great use of the production values. GL from me.

When you get a chance, please take a look at my art related pod BIG BUGS , and let me know what you think about this reverse perspective on the world. I would love to get your critique on it. Thanks!

    • Some amazing imagery and fitting soundtrack! It's great seeing the contrast between her onstage persona's and her interviewed self. Kept me intrigued throughout,

    • Definitely out of the ordinary. Good interview and well shot. But what hooked me was the music. Really cool sound.

      GL from me.

Please take a moment to check out my latest POD, BIG MEDIA fails again and feel free to give it a GL if you like it.

      Thanks.

    • I'm a believer in exploring and using art as your expression. Dance and movement is an incredible source to fully feel what living is about. Butoh is interesting in that it is a mix of history, art and movement filled with emotion and feeling. I enjoyed the film. Great shots, good interview and wonderful music. Thank you Dale for creating a great piece. Keep it up.

    • She is a powerful expression of the beauty in shadows. I love the way you capture her versatile angles in dance and art. I want to hear more about what her personal journey looked like to bring her into butoh. Beautiful segment.

    • I was hooked. The pod moves effortlessly. Very beautiful. thanks for the comment ! I think your pod really helped me to think about what it takes to break out of a violence cycle. That will help me in my approaches to other issues.

    • I can't get the bastard Greenlight button to work. And not just on this video either. I click once - nothing happens. I doubleclick. Ditto. I'll come back and try again.

It is amazing to see a series of Mizu's works in tandem, as the video wonderfully portrays the power of vision and movement that Mizu is endeavoring to create with her performances.
Thank you for making this happen!

    • DONUT freak out! : ) i uploaded a higher resolution version of the video...it should reappear soon...
Thanks for all the support and kind words. The lighting was a little off and the sound was low, but the content is compelling enough without production perfection I hope... thanks again!

    • Gl, you did a great job introducing this performance style. I am a big fan of Butoh. It would have been nice to see mention of some of the founders ( kazuo Ohno, etc.) but still great job.
