Live from the Doha Forum

Dancing Ink Productions' Rita J. King and Joshua S. Fouts recently hosted a virtual world event live from the U.S.-Islamic World Forum in Doha, Qatar and simultaneously in the virtual world of Second Life. The event discussed ways in which virtual worlds can be used to build better understanding between the U.S. and the Islamic world. It was a first for all the participants, including Nashwa Al Ruwaini, who has the two top-rated television shows in the Middle East, "Nashwa" and "Poet of Millions." Howard Gordon, the Executive Producer and Head Writer of Fox's hit show "24" also participated, along with Ambassador Cynthia P. Schneider, former U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands. In a twist, Palestinian Hip-Hop artist Muhammed Mughrabi from Jerusalem and Iranian artist Yas from Tehran, did a freestyle hip-hop performance in Arabic and Farsi, respectively.

      To clarify. This was not a promotional piece, but the first in a series of reports Dancing Ink Productions is producing as part of a global quest called "Understanding Islam through Virtual Worlds," which we are doing as part of a project with the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs.

      Throughout the next six months we will be producing four or five more reported pieces like this exploring different ways in which 3-D Immersive spaces like Second Life, and others, can be used to build bridges with the Islamic world.

    • Well, the piece was produced as a report for http://www.dancinginkproductions.com/, who did the session in Doha. We used a lot of video and audio that had been captured by observers at the event -- some very tenuous sound, in particular. So there were some challenges!

      For more of our work, look under Draxtor Despres on blip.tv or youtube. I'm his collaborator on something like 8-10 of the pieces, reporting, scriptwriting, and co-producing -- but he's got an amazing eye for machinima production and a world class audio engineer!

    • Great Second Life cinematography! I was a little lost in the meaning of this piece but I'd love to hear more about it and se if we can get some of your work on Current TV.
