The General Store

Chris_Lewis
This is a story about a general store in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. This general store has been in operation since the 1830's. In a world of large consumer demand we explore how this store has survived and continues to thrive in a Wal Mart dominated industry.

    • Bravo! Fantastic video; brings back memories of visiting my grandparents on the farm, as we always went to the General Store and to socialize with everybody in town. Every neighborhood/town should have a General Store.

    • Thanks for making this excellent short video---this was a job well done and even though I am a bit of a newbie visitor to Rabbit Hash--in the first five minutes I was there just about this time last year---I could tell it was a very special place---a remaining piece of what this country was once like--we are blessed to have such a special place here in this corner of SW Ohio, Northern Ketucky and SE Indiana. I call Rabbit Hash--"a little slice of heaven"-it is at least to me--my version of what I hope heaven is like.
Thanks for making this film--I hope it garners much attention--but not too much---we don't need everyone coming to Rabbit Hash--ya don't want a special place being loved to death.
Congrats on getting the attention it has recieved thus far.

    • .... most interesting... could have been that my recently arrived great, great grandfather would have crossed the river from Rising Sun, Indiana to visit the Rabbit Hash store.... 1846 :)... family migrated to Illinois to Colorado to Missouri and now son lives a stone's throw from Rabbit Hash.... Life is a Journey of Circles... :) ..... a visit to a time in the past

    • Why does Walmart distroy businesses as genuine and family oriented as this? And there are so many other lives that they disturb with their prices and products.

    • I've never been to RabbitHash but my cycling group does long rides with a stop at the General Store. I love stores like this because, as the video states, they take me back to a simpler time. This video brings back memories for me of the "Little Store" that I used to frequent as a child. The Little Store was a hang out for kids, like a social club back in the day. The RabbitHash General Store is the grown up Kentucky version of my old Little Store.

    • Very interesting to know that people hurry to the future and fast paced life... only to miss the simplicity of the past.

    • Chris,

Congrats on making your dreams a reality. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing a humanistic documentary about a place that has touched so many peoples lives (mine included). Keep up the good work, film and art has the power to change people's lives. I leave you with a quote from Kurt Vonnegut: "I wish that people who are conventionally supposed to love each other would say to each other, when they fight, "Please-- a little less love, and a little more common decency."
      Hi ho.

    • This little film creates a great integration of the music, the people and the feeling of an all but lost rural America. The general store is an icon of another time and another place. I loved it.

    • During this upcoming election season, we're all going to be blasted with a bazillion buzz words, idle promises, flat out lies, contradictions, mud slinging, cat thrashing, wife swapping, back stabbing and number crunching. But nobody's going to dare to tackle "quality-of-life" issues. Rabbit Hash is the "Center of the Universe." It is the point where harmony, tranquility, music, art, talent, fun, respect, love, spirit, caring, stewardship, honesty, dog standing, cow tipping and fishing all intersect. Rabbit Hash is "quality-of-life." And Chris has put it all down on film for us. There is no question about it. This piece is a stand-alone winner! Thank you for sharing, Chris.

    • This was a great story! Too many times we look over the simple things in life! This reminds me of the old general store located in our neighborhood where I was born, Wichita, Kansas, and use to walk down there and buy a handful of candy for a penny.

It was great! I am sorry that my two boys have never had the opportunity to experience the old general store.

    • Nice portrayal! I especially like the way Clay's comments were edited to one word responses...

      A very deserving video!

    • Rabbit Hash is my home. Since moving there 5 years ago, I have gained the best group of friends I have had in my life. There is something quite magical about this little river hamlet. It is an old timey version of "Cheers"...."where everybody knows your name...."

    • With all the "reality" programming out there that seems plucked straight from Jerry Springer, it's refreshing to see a truly "real" view of middle america, and to be reminded that "community" is still a legitimate concept in a world where human connections have largely been replaced by texts and emails.
Beautiful cinematography and colorful characters. I liked it.

    • Its a very cool video about values, about the important things in life like tratidions, friendship, time, experiences, etc.
The author sends a clear message that simple things are essential and that simple things trascend in time and space.
      Great edition. Great photo.
      A very cool piece.

    • Thanks for taking a look at my short. I enjoyed making this film. It meant a lot to me to capture a moment in time. I think of this short as photograph of what life was like today at the General Store in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky.

    • Chris_Lewis:

The General Store is close to my home and the area is so beautiful. The changes and the histroy of the area need to be documented for future generations. Our country really needs to get back in touch with the simpler times in American history. Great short Mr. Lewis!
