I think the point has been missed. Hipsters don't lay claim to inspire anyone outside their 'click'. They seem to absorb themselves in what they deem fashionably acceptable by only their peers. Hipsters what nothing to do with mainstream cultural happening, they rather experiment with counterculture events that most mainstream americans are completely unaware of. It gives them a sense of uniqueness that their social click can simultaneously feel when engaging.
Almost the entirety of the population of hipsters are youth. They are only looking for a means to identify themselves amongst the tongs of sheepole. They seek to be different yet they still want to identify with peers. Hipsters are at a point in their lives in which they began to disassociate themselves from mass media assimilation and explore a path intellectual stimulation. They're only rebelling from the status quo.
I used to be a quote un quote Hipster. I would know. And honestly, its was one of the most important time of my life. Alot of seeds were planted for me to grow as an intellect and an individual. Hipsters odd looks and egotistical personalities really only serve as an expression of growth into individuality. Importantly, I learned that to be yourself you truly have to think for yourself. Youthfulness just has a silly way of conveying this axiom.

I dont c why people carnt were wot they like after all is this not ment to b a free world with free speach and free spirits like the old saying u carnt judge a book by its cover the same goes for people u carnt tell who they r by wot they were. And if ur that shallow that u wont speak to any 1 that dresses a bit diferently than u do then u could pass the best friends u will ever have by just because of the way u think

Stereotypes these days are all running together: hipsters are indies and goths are emo. Why even bother to blame one without the other? They're ALL the reason for our problems, why don't we just say that?

why all the hate on hipsters? not everyone who dresses like a hipster is some elite douchebag. just like not every kid dressed in black is depressed or not every teen in baggy jeans is going to shoot you. it's dumb stereotyping. you don't know anything about a person by the way they dress. what good has every come from stereotyping?

lies .. you can tell a lot by how people dress. Men who have skinny jeans must a) have a minute package b) like getting there balls vacuum packed .... people who wear all black all the time most probably dont have the confidence to buy a coloured garment ... .people who buy baggy jeans are dumb shits for not buying ones that fit :) ... obviously though thats my opinion and your entitled to argue against it!

what's the difference between someone who is a hipster and someone who is indie? they pretty much look the same. and how does one even become classified as a hipster? and do they call themselves that? i dunno..i have so many questions.

imagine being in a forest with two snakes ... one is poisonous one isnt ...they both look exactly the same ... now would you say that the snakes are pretty much the same? Its generally beliefs and personality that defines subculture these days. Not the clothes they wear.

keeshii768:
Well, a year ago a girl I graduated with in highschool was on my campus and we started hanging out. She called herself "indie." What it appeared to mean was you dress the way an indie band would and listen to, read, talk everything indie. However, she didn't tell me she had an out of control ego.
She was introducing me to the culture of indie but because I didn't know exact things or bands or the fashion of indie culture she started snubbing me. Whatever interests I had were old hat, when I thought I was fashionable I was not-- you know, "You don't know? Well I do." She even used the word intellectual to describe herself, which was an overstatement.
And the final straw, happened during a night festival that took place during the first of the month. It's a hipster/artsy person magnet. I knew she would be there so I went. I asked her to call me once I was on the street. I called 3 times. No answer. Found her in the thrift shop and she was holding one of my mother's dresses. She was going to buy it. I was excited and happy! I said "Oh, that's one of my mother's dresses I sold to the store!" She frowned and she put it back on a rack, as if it was going to give her an STD.
Now that's a hipster. Rude, egocentric, needy of others' admiration and attention, fashion snob, movie snob, book snob, think their the defintion of hip and cool--complete jackass.

Peace doesn't come from wearing it. Todays so called "counter culture" is becoming more and more based on making a fashion statement rather than making a difference. Stand up for what you believe in.

See many hipsters doing community service?
No, they'd rather talk about how bad society is, how superior in music, intellect (overstatement), and dress they are all while shopping with money mommy and daddy deposited into their account last night. - 3 years ago

It's not hipsters I mind so much as scene kids. Get an assymetrical haircut, the tightest and brightest clothes you can find (unless it's striped, then make it dark grey and black), a pair of terrible sunglasses (preferably the "venetian blind" kind), talk in annoying valley girl speech pattern (especially if you're male) then wrap a keffiyeh around you're neck.
Okay I think keffiyehs are cool actually, but all the rest of that is crap!
I on the otherhand, advocate Cyberpunk as a fashion and not just a literary genre. Find some old broken electronics. Tear out the circuit boards, then tie/saftey pin/duct-tape it to your jacket (which just has to be black or camouflage). - 3 years ago

it's the wannabe hipsters i hate - like the christian kids who try so hard to look hip but who wouldn't even be able to carry on even a half assed convo about a damn thing other than some church BS .
christian wannabe hipsters basically aspire to look like they're trying to look like the hipsters who are posers themselves . trash . - 3 years ago

Hipsters are the end result of a society over fed on advertising. Hipsters are void of creativity, individuality, and self-purpose. They buy the hippest clothes, go to the hippest bars, follow the hippest trends, listen to the hippest music, delve into the hippest addictions and try to sell it off as a faction of the indie subculture. But they are not apart of any subculture. They are the bile that floats to the top of the subculture. Subculture kids wouldn't pay them attention and trendy kids won't even look at them. They are the crud stuck in between the cracks of culture. Fuck hipsters.

agreed ... this huge gap of average people who have no individuality conform to the image of what a young teenager should look like ... but unlike the small amount of really trendy people .. they shit it up and end up as a flock of average joe nobodys. but then again if everyone was immensely different than each other, the world simply wouldnt work.

How is that any different than what people said about the "beatniks?"

Hipsters are shallow, anti-intellectual followers by definition. They are certainly not the only class of such people; they are a sub-class. Doesn't make them less annoying.
But it also doesn't mean they are to blame for much of anything. That would be taking them way too seriously. They are just teenagers (and the older teenagers usually referred to as twenty-somethings) doing what teenagers mostly do: they're trying to fit in, define themselves and understand their place in a crazy world.
