New York on a budget

caracu
My friend Alberto and I went to the Big Apple for the first time, after he won some tickets in a raffle. We left the day after without a plan, reservations, and with little money. We didn't know what to expect, and we were pretty happy to be traveling with a feeling of uncertainty, and encountering a few surprises along the way.

This video was never intended to be shot for TV or anything, hence it was shot with a digital camera (kodak Z612) and not a video camcorder. The jittery shots and informal attitude prevail. So I had to work with what I have. Nevertheless I was happy with the first hand feeling to it, as it may seem more like a home video than any of those great travel shows on TV. The video was rendered with sort of a film look to it, so it might be a little too bright/dark at times. The audio is not great since the mic in that camera is very simple. And by Alberto's request I had to appear in the majority of shots, so just so you know I'm not being hedonist. Also it is 8 minutes and 20 seconds long, but we believe it runs fast and smoothly; hopefully, hehe.

We found New York City (we only stayed in Manhattan) to be an incredible place, with very nice people and a good city attitude, trust me, I'm from Mexico city ;) . We hope it inspires you to go visit such a great city and to why not, travel in such a backpacker's way.

We hope you like it, and thanks for watching!

Thanks man, we are happy you liked it. I think its informal approach made it more realistic, hopefully. We loved NY and we'll definitely go back, incredible place with some really cool places and night scene (and I'm not talking only about bars), a city unlike anything else.

      Thank you for your comment!

Thanks a lot! I hope it serves its purpose to entertain and inform, hehe. We just wanted to go for the fun of feeling lost, and see what came our way. We met cool new yorkers and saw so many cool places like Greenwich village and the Soho. It was hard to narrow it to 8 minutes. We found funny suff, like a Starbucks literally one block away from the other, bands playing live on the street, just very cool stuff that made our backpacking trip totally worth it. Walking really is the best way to get to know the city, and we walked for about 10 hours every day. Thank you for your comment, I'm glad you liked it! :)

Hi, thank you very much! It was very hard to do so because we never intended to make a pod & so we just shot the video for ourselves & friends, pretty informal, just like our trip, hehe. So I had to do the editing and salvage what I could, we had 50 minutes of footage, but had to narrow it to 8. Hopefully it gave some insight to people who've never been to NY. I appreciate your comments and I'm very glad you liked it, thank you!

Thanks! Yeah it was pretty overwhelming for us to be in New York and just get on the subway and see the people, the city, the lights and the buildings. I live in San Diego, and I'm from Mexico city so I am used to big cities, but nothing like it. Such a beautiful place and it gave me a sense of "life" in every corner, really.

We spent a lot of time in the subway (2 1/2 nights, hehe) so we got to see so many things that didn't make it into the pod (footage was 50 min & had to narrow it to 8), and it was pleasing to get to see the different neighborhoods, each had its charm. I would love to live in NY, such a cool place, and great people too.

Thank you for your comment, and I'm glad you liked it! ;)

Oh by all means do, it will be cool to see more of NY from a New Yorker's perspective. And shooting with a digital camera can be tricky, but you can make it work, I learned that next time I should speak closer to the mic, and next time I'll do the shooting in a more formal way. Thank you for your very kind words, and we definitely look forward to go back and also see more places outside Manhattan... too much to see :)

    • Wow the compression made it look very crappy, specially the titles, hehe.
In my defense the original file looked very good, and it wasn't very heavy (150 megs), I used h.264. I wonder why it looks that way?
