Suicide rates rising among baby-boomers

The suicide rate in the United States is increasing for the first time in a decade, particularly among middle-aged white women, a new study finds.

"This is a group we haven't had as much focus on in terms of suicide, because the death rates were higher in elderly white males, and there has been a lot of attention to teenagers and young adults," said lead researcher Susan P. Baker, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "This 40-to-64 age group has been neglected."

The suicide rate declined over the same period for blacks and remained stable for Asians and Native Americans, the study found.

Baker said it's not clear what might be causing the rising suicide rates among middle-aged whites. "We need to study the individual people who have committed suicide and see what were their living circumstances. Were they depressed, was this impulsive? A lot more specific information is needed," she said.

One possible explanation is that doctors may not be paying enough attention to the mental health of their middle-aged white patients to spot the risk of suicide, Baker said.

The report was published online Oct. 21 in theAmerican Journal of Preventive Medicine.

For the study, Baker and her colleagues used the Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System. This site provides information on cause of deaths, broken down by age, race, sex and state. The statistics are culled from annual reports by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics.

The researchers found that from 1999 to 2005, the overall suicide rate in the United States rose 0.7 percent. However, among middle-aged white women, the annual increase was 3.9 percent; among middle-aged white men it was 2.7 percent.

The most frequent method of suicide was using a firearm, although the rate of suicide by this method declined. Suicide by hanging and suffocation rose significantly, accounting for 22 percent of all suicides by 2005. Among men, hanging/suffocation rates increased 6.3 percent annually; among women, the yearly rise was 2.3 percent. Poisoning accounted for 18 percent of suicides, the study found.

-More at link. The study accounts for an increase between 99 and 05, so there could be higher rates now due to the current situation.

    • To be honest, the majority of baby-boomers make me sick to my stomach. I really can't stand them most of the time, so I don't have a lot of sympathy for them.

That being said, it's probably a mixture of a couple of factors that drive their suicide rates up. Nothing can really be conclusive until we see their living circumstances but, I'd guess it was the economic pinch, political corruption and a general distaste for Americans and where American society is going that drove up the rate, probably combined with the fact that their numbers are a hell of a lot bigger.

    • I bet that it is just a coincidence that it happened at the same time that doctors started handing out anti-depressants like they were candy! Especially to women. "oh, PMS? Here take prozac" "oh, cant sleep? Here, take some xanax" "oh, your husband and kids make you do all the work and it makes you unhappy? Here, take some...."

    • This is NOT an unnoticed phenomenon around the world as this article from 2002 reports:

"The suicide rate increases under Conservative governments, research suggests.

Australian scientists found the suicide rate in the country increased significantly when a Conservative government was in power."

    • Meh, if you're weak enough to commit suicide then go ahead. The gene pool needs chlorine any way, it's high time something starts cancelling out liberals sterilizing day to day life for the dumbest of the dumb.

I see you cling to 19th century interpretations of the evolutionary premise of 'survival of the fittest'. That's kinda interesting since it this level of understanding that has directly led American culture to DEVOLVE into the situations you complain about most...

      So funny!

Not looking to enlighten- simply responding to your comment- The 'situations' I was referring to are those that in your OPINION are "sterilizing day to day life for the dumbest of the dumb"- Nothing in the universe happens for NO REASON- therefore there are factors for the "dumbing down" of America.

Those factors are not as simple a BLAMING liberals- and in many cases are created by the specious logic of special interests being accepted by politicians who THINK like you...

I'd hope we'd agree that PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY would go a long way to fix the problem in this fine country of OURS-

I couldn't agree more that personal responsibility would go a LONG way to correcting societal problems today. Are liberals solely to blame, no, of course not but I think I can safely say that it wasn't a conservative attorney that opened pandora's box and filed a lawsuit against McDonalds because some dumb bitch spilled coffe on her lap in the drive and sued because she didn't know it was hot. Seriously people passing out excuses like candy at halloween in this country is getting old, I'm ready for the weaker of society to start disposing of themselves instead being a burden on the productive people in society. I think society owes it to the TRULY disabled to be their caretakers, but it's far too easy now a days for a lazy piece of shit to jump on the bandwagon and attach some lame ass disorder to their lack of determination to make something of themselves, it's time these people get left behind and learn to fend for themselves for a change.

Well IMO there are too many LAWYERS running our government. BTW I looked into the McDonald's case and you were right that firm did seem to be liberal leaning. Let's be realistic however- MONEY is green to both the left and the right and was really the motivation...

Bottom line is that I think there's big challenges to our REPUBLIC created by special interests INFLUENCE on BOTH parties! I can't simply blame one side- Nothing is ever that simple...

Now do you think that if those folks having challenges who take GOVERNMENT money are REQUIRED to pay back their community- would it help the situation?

No, I don't think that everyone who receives some gov't assistance should have to repay it. There are others that I think should have to repay it though. Let's face it, there are chronic abusers of the system that pretty much run cradle to grave leeching off of welfare and unemployment benefits. I find that absolutely insulting to the hardworkers in society that end up footing the bill for that shit.

Yea, I agree with you that the problems come from both sides and that there are far too many lawyers involved in the gov't.

    • I'd like to see this study to determine how they arrived at their numbers. For example if they took into account the shear quantity of people in the baby boomer generation. That spike in the number of people will of course lead to a spike in the number of suicides.

Regardless of the statistics though, I think that one of the obvious causes for the increase in baby boomer suicides is the work habits of this particular demographic. From a research standpoint, baby boomers have a tendency to live their work and put all of their time, energy and focus on getting ahead instead of their quality of life (health and happiness). Now that they are coming on retirement, many of them are feeling the effects of the neglect to their bodies and are realizing that they do not have much to show for a lifetime of toil (we can partially thank our current economic meltdown for this). Rest assured, from where we sit today economically, we will surely see the suicide rate increase ten fold in baby boomers, as many of them will be forced out of retirement as they watch their life savings disappear.

It's a sad state of affairs and we have a few greedy people to thank for it.

    • I think there are bigger things working than drinking water. For example, we know that major depressive disorders are higher in women and that people with mental disorders such as MDD make up around 90% of people who commit suicide. We also know that women attempt suicide 3 times as much in comparison to men, but men die more often because of the methods used (firearms and suffocation). This study mentions that while firearms use actually declined, female suicides by "hanging/suffocation rates increased... 2.3 percent."

Nonetheless, a precarious situation that requires attention from all medical professionals, not only mental health professionals.

    • If they were drinking floridated water you bet it could be a big cause....it was first fluoridated in the concentration camps in Germany to make the prisoners more docile and depress them into a resigned submission....it is a neurotoxin. It was then used on the German population after WWII, because they were pretty upset after losing the war and it was a way to calm dissent. When we brought all the german mind controll scientists to work for the US after the war, there were several experiments in Utah and other school districts after WWII using fluoridated water on segments of school kids. They switched the results and made it look pretty great....when in actuality it caused real problems with bones, decay, and as a neurotoxin it had pretty bad effects. But hey, the mining industry had an expensive and HIGHLY TOXIC BY PRODUCT THAT WAS COSTING THEM A FORTUNE TO DISPOSE OF......WHEN BINGO A LIGHTBULB WENT OFF IN SOME GREEDY CAPITALIST BRAIN AND IT WAS ALL packaged and promoted TO SELL IT TO THE US PUBLIC IN WATER AND TOOTHPASTE.

Sadly all of this can be researched and found, and even the switched studies were revealed....but no one stopped dispensing with this highly dangerous neurotoxin....and it was continued to be promoted to the American Public. Today it is in most all municipal water and toothpaste....and even many bottled waters and some drinks.

So many toxic laden foods and medicines are used on women these days it would be hard to say if only one could be the cause. Combine intense hormonal changes with toxic water , food and medicines, and add survival issues and real concerns about the future of their children in this messed up world, and there is a hot bed of causes that would make sense for great depression to lead to suicide. So sad that this is happening. I really get it.

Maybe our new president Obama will appoint people who really care about public health instead of appointees from big Pharma, big Chemical. Big Agro-chemical: and appoint people whom would really serve as protectors for our families health, safety, and well being.
