US may never release Guantánamo inmates

Seventeen Chinese prisoners who have been held for nearly seven years in Guantánamo Bay will be informed on Monday that they could spend the rest of their lives behind bars, even though they face no charges and have been told by a judge they should be freed.

No country is willing to accept them and the US justice department has now blocked moves for them to be allowed to go to the US mainland, where they had been offered a home by refugee and Christian organisations.

The men's lawyer, Sabin Willett: "After years of stalling and staying and appellate gamesmanship, you pleaded no contest - they are not enemy combatants," Willett has written. "You have never charged them with any crime."

    • And we are not closing our prison camps in Iraq either. Holding over 1,300 people, only about 8% have enough evidence compiled against them to be tried in Iraqi courts.

    • This story has been bothering me all day.

The idea of being held for 7 years. Being tortured, abused humiliated and treated like a dangerous animal. For nothing.

      And being innocent.

And then, finally, after 7 years of the living hell that is your life you are told the world hasn't forgotten about you. That they believe in your innocence. That someone with authority has said you should be free.

And then to be told that the land of the free doesn't care about your freedom. They are not sorry for their mistake and they may keep you in the concentration camp forever.

It is so fucking wrong and evil.

They have no power. No hope.

The only people in the world who can help are the american people. The american people could use their democratic powers to force their leaders to do what is right.

Sadly, we know americans will never do this.

      I feel sick.

    • its not democracy vs communism, or trial, this happens in communist countries as well, and as it says above a judge already told them they were innocent.

This is American govt officials refusing to admit they did anything wrong. Especially if they move into the US they have a HUGE lawsuit against the US govt. They are a financial liability and that is why they stay.

    • That doesn't represent America... or does it, now? We need to work on getting those people a trial since they have been detained under our laws. Even if they are in Cuba, it is our system that put them there. They should be released unless there this sufficient evidence to charge them with crime @ a proper trial.

    • There is no escape from Gitmo. You are under constant surveillance. You are routinely tortured, deprived of your basic human rights.

Even if you are not guilty of anything, you can be held for years.

      This is American justice.

    • I can't even imagine what I'd do in that situation. If I knew I were wrongly imprisioned, especially in a place (where I admit I have no real idea what it's like but from the rumors) which would be similar to hell on earth, I have no idea what I'd try and do to escape.

    • What more do the believers of this fascist regime need
to know. Are they so brain washed even this can not wake them up. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is no excuse for non justice.
