Gov. arrested in Obama successor probe

CHICAGO – Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested today on charges that accuse him of trying to benefit from his ability to appoint President-elect Barack Obama's replacement in the U.S. Senate.

The U.S. Attorney in Chicago says federal investigators bugged Blagojevich's campaign offices and placed a tap on his home phone. At a news conference on Tuesday, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said the corruption charges represent "a truly new low."

An FBI affidavit says the 51-year-old Democrat was intercepted on wiretaps conspiring to sell or trade the vacant Senate seat for personal benefits for himself and his wife.

FBI chief Robert Grant says even seasoned investigators were stunned by what they heard on those tapes.

Fitzgerald described the situation by saying: "We were in the middle of a corruption crime spree and we wanted to stop it."

    • President-elect Barack Obama’s ties to arrested Illinois Democratic Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich run primarily through Chicago slum lord and felon Tony Rezko.

      Rezko served as the political godfather for both Blagojevich and Obama, helping both to rise in Chicago and Illinois politics. Obama himself has credited Rezko with helping to his political career.

      Rezko raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for both politicians.

      A 76-page FBI affidavit released today after the arrest of Blagojevich and his chief of staff, John Harris, says Blagojevich conspired “to sell” the Illinois Senate seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.

      U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald called the effort to barter the seat the “most sinister and appalling” of a long list of accusations against Blagojevich. Blagojevich, as governor, is responsible for naming Obama’s replacement.
      I am pretty sure Barack went to confession and took a long shower, we should be alright.

    • There are a lot of Obama supporters now, I being on also, he is our President ,It is just the far left Little babies that vote everything I post down. But obviously they cant vote everything down or I wouldn't kicking ass the way I am. And...the more they try and keep me down. The more I will kick their ass, that is how it works.
