Protesters label Redford a Racist

Hollywood's Sundance Kid is hurting poor people.
So say some East Coast ministers and conservative activists, who took to the streets in front of a downtown Salt Lake City theater on the eve of Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival to accuse the actor of holding down low-income Americans with his opposition to oil and gas drilling near national parks in Utah.
The protesters, led by the Congress of Racial Equality's national spokesman Niger Innis, suggested Redford should "relinquish his wealth" and live like a poor person. They complained that the filmmaker's anti-drilling stance could lead to higher energy prices for inner-city residents, forcing them to accept a lower standard of living.
The clergymen prayed for Redford "to see the light" and linked his environmental activism with racism.

Tree hugging racists!!!

    • Interesting. I have this disquieting feeling that there is another stinky shoe yet to drop on this one. The Congress of Racial Equality, eh? How does one get elected to THAT august body, I wonder? More to the point, it sounds like the entire Congress is sharing the one brain cell, so I wonder if the issuer of this press release's turn had come around to use it when he (or she) sent THIS one out.

      Since they are calling upon Redford to renounce his wealth and live like a poor person, one assumes they are calling upon all wealthy persons on all sides of this issue to do likewise? No?

      I always enjoy having folks from the East Coast tell folks on the Rocky Mountain Front what to do with their natural resources, because I know the same folks are holding their breath waiting for direction on what to do with their OWN natural resources by the folks who live along the Rocky Mountain Front. Sigh.

    • Thats the usual outcome when you see the word Republican attached to an organization supposedly dedicated to the rights of poor and minorities.

    • Just because you want to protect the envronment and heritage sites doesn't mean you're against poor or a racist.

      I have seen the testimony where the regulator of fannymae and fredimac said that people shouldn't be able to get loans they don't understand or have a hope of paying. The congress turned it into a race and poor issue, if you can't aford the loan the bank does a disservice in giving one to you. Wait a little longer save up some more before you by so the house is a blessing rather than a milstone;

    • funny how cheap gas was until the Arab embargo then within ten years oil went from a commodity to a profit center for oil traders. When Oil bottomed out under $26 a barrel a trader on wall street explained it as being the result of not a trader on earth stupid enough to believe the the price of oil was going to go up any time soon. That just feeds my personal belief that oil prices are set more than any other factor by traders speculating in the futures market. Can you imagine the eureka moment after the oil embargo when the first trader realized he was going realize a absolutely sick profit on some boring old oil contract.

    • Funny how a Republican, allied with a church bishop who is associated with a Republican Action Group, is tasking Redford as being racist. Maybe the Republicans can put their energy into outlawing futures trading on oil supplies and oil will go back to $10 a barrel again and we would have cheap gas for all.

    • Oil will always find someone to destract from their crimes. Funny how it is usually some right wing religious organization to lead the misinformation campaign. "We are christians , therefore we are right and you are wrong."
      Not much mystery why Americans are turning their collective backs on organized christianity.

    • How these poor people do not understand that his stance is supporting the earth for all humanity?

      It is about something bigger than a bunch of poor people in Salt Lake city. Poor guys... they need some education.

    • Like many Americans, I strongly admire Robert Redford for his staunch support for protecting America's natural heritage and evnvironment. This totally false allegation is incredibly offensive.
