Why we might never recover from puppy love

No, not puppies. Puppy Love. The hyper intense and passionate feelings of first relationships -- especially if they take place when you're young. In a new study of long-term relationships, researchers found that the euphoria of early love can actually damage future relationships by setting unrealistic benchmarks used to judge future relationships. Of course, there's no logistical way to avoid a FIRST relationship. But do you agree that you have higher standards for "love" because of some guy you dated in high school? Discuss.

    • A love story... On this island.. where I grew up...

I fell in love with a guy at first sight... thought I wasn't good enough for him, so I dated his friend to be near to him, for years.
His friend was a dog, screwed my best friend because I was still a virgin, and did all kinds of shit like that. Until we weren't on the island and we of course broke up. But, Who was there to dry my eyes? The guy I loved.

The night before I left Okinawa I found out that in all the years, he had fallen for me at the same time that I for him.
Every girl in the school & and older too wanted him, but he never really dated. That night I got to be in his arms. I got to feel a kiss... I always thought there would be more, but I lost where he was...
After he moved to Hawaii and I was on the mainland...USA he still wanted to be with me and I with him...
But somehow I lost track of him. I still miss him. He was my guardian Angel for so many years when I had no idea... He was always the first one who was there for me. I thought I wasn't worthy. I wish I had known.

Everything in life would have been so different.

    • First love that sets unrealistic benchmarks? Obviously, this person is a hopeless romantic. Let's get one thing straight- the majority of us meet our first love when we're teenagers. Tell me, were you thinking straight at that age? Are you still that same person now? I sure as hell wasn't, that's why my relationship started and ended in a year, because I didn't use my head and I didn't know who I was.

I kissed a lot of frogs to find my prince and I sure as hell don't compare him to my "puppy love" experiences.

    • Your first love will always hold a special piece of you, and you'll never forget them. It's probally the hardest relationship youll ever have to get over, and as for the second.. third.. fourth... even if they're better in every way the feelings aren't comparable to the first time you ever felt them. It's sad.

    • This story reminds me of one of my favourite Maccabees songs. And yes, I am in love with lead singer Orlando Weeks and might never get over it.

    • Why would anyone want to get over their first puppy loves? I think that most normal, well-adjusted people view them as fond memories. They don't equate them with the real life present.

    • First Love is the only true love. Everything else is compromise.

True love is a gift. It isn't something we do by chance, but is something we are given by divine grace. We are given one life and one true love to last a lifetime. Likewise, we have one heart, one brain and one soul, and regardless of the possible benefits, we cannot have multiples of any one at any one time. It is possible to replace a heart, but it is not without conditions and consequences.

I believe we are given one true love in a lifetime. It is up to both lovers to protect and honor this love, less it be lost. Once lost, it can never be restored or replaced. Love can be grown/cultivated/reproduced, but nothing is as pure as the original.

Much like a drug, true love is a perfect first time high. You could spend the rest of your life trying to reproduce that feeling, but you'll never quite get there.

    • no no no.

that first relationship ended for a reason. how am i gonna compare current or future relationships to the "bliss" that was that first relationship while keeping in mind that he clearly was not flawless? and neither would any relationship one may have be.

i believe unrealistic expectations should more likely be attributed to movies (well, and the common notion that everything should be easy and that laziness works). wouldn't it be lovely if all our "movies" had such happy endings? but i wonder, how does one make those happy *endings* last a lifetime?

    • well, not having dated any guys in high school (or after for that matter) I can't really say. I have however encountered such girls in high school and college (and unfortunately after) who either had unrealistic ideas of love and expected some kind of ever-attentive Romance Novel hero who anticipates her every need and mood with ESP-like clarity; or I have encountered the scarred cynical type who suspected any romantic gesture having had a really bad first love experience.

The former type is living in a self-absorbed fairy-tale but the latter type lives in a dark world of medication, mistrust, and expensive therapy sessions. So I think bad first relationships are far worse than girls waiting for Prince Charming in a Porsche.

      Don't you know????
ever-attentive Romance Novel hero who anticipates her every need and mood with ESP-like clarity... is where it's at!
Yeah! Text me 23847 times a day with sweeet stuffs. (no plz don't!!! Once is fine..) Then come home and cook wearing only an apron so you don't get... you know .. hurt.. (yeah that's sexy.. and will get you some)

Uh.. And on special days .. I want to go to a private beach with a bottle of wine and a box of orieo cookies and stay all night and have romantic sex, then lay on a blanket talking while looking at the stars.. and then watch the sun come up! (I know that will never happen.. so throw some rose petals on the bed and be really sweet and don't go to sleep right after the romantic lovin... stick around 10 min or something for some cuddling!)

Bring home flowers from time to time..

(star this) Let me have the remote control... I'll most likely give it back to you because I'm not possessive. And I would rather cuddle anyway.

Say some nice things... just because you mean them.

      Yeah. That's where it's at!
