Fat Shaming at the Bus Stop

Located in the Netherlands, Fitness First took it upon themselves to use a different approach to marketing their clubs - public shaming. When someone sits on a bench to rest while waiting for the bus, the ad literally shows the person's weight in red numbers for the world to see.
What do you think about this public shaming?

Carry as heavy a load as you can, then sit on that scale. Bigger number = more intimidation. If anyone laughs, one mean look will shut them up!

while they are at it they mite as well check blood pressure n sugar n heart rate while ur sittin there along wit a bunch of pix of people wit complications from diabetes n high blood pressure n obesity
if the point is to humiliate then watever
but if the point is to motivate then they can trade the subtleties for some ejumacation

I have to respond to a few coments directly to and after my post first I do not drive by choice.I walk everywhere and I still would be very unhappy ro have my weight shown(as a child being made fun of ruined my self esteem It has affected every aspect of my life at one point or another).I would also like to add that the post implies that the bench as a scale is inconspicuous.this is just plain mean.and to those who like this kind of thing how lucky for you that you have went through life so secure in your self please keep in mind others had not been as fortunate

This is stupid. Overweight people know they're overweight. This will provide no revelation. Many overweight people struggle with their weight. Look at Oprah, Kirsty Allie, etc. I hope this gym loses business because of this. It's like calling people ugly to promote your cosmetic surgery business.

i am 6' and 185lbs and the wii tells me i am overweight. this culture is so obsessed with weight. health i more important than weight. an ideal weight is different for each person. although some of us like some "junk in the trunk."

if you are significantly overweight, it's not like other people can't see it. the scale on the bench is just stating the obvious. plus, this ad for a gym isn't the culprit for your poor body image, look around, the magazines, the billboards, the are full of perfectly unattainable bodies.

Come on...the obesity rate here in America is embarrassing in itself. So what if we want to motivate those who "struggle" because they choose to eat poorly and not exercise. Out of 10 obese people, I'm willing to bet that 1 or 2 actually have a medical condition while the rest having a lazy condition.

I'm tired for complaints about suffering. Paying for 2 airline seats. How the world wont bow to your handicap! I'm sorry but there are people who actually deserve welfare. Unemployment. Yes you can help it! Its a simple task of eating healthier and not always crumbling to that of the munchies. Become active. Everyone should not have to suffer for ones choice though. Become CONFIDENT IN WHO YOU ARE. As a person. No ranting. We are human no ones perfect. NO ONE.

it's only shaming if you're ashamed of yourself. i don't care if people know how much i weigh. that's just how I am. if you're ashamed of your weight and yourself in the first place, then you're probably against this method of advertising. to me, it's not with positive intentions that this gym used this to advertise, but i don't think this is "shaming".
i also don't think many people will think very highly of the gym owners either.

Insanely brilliant marketing! Here we are discussing the ad in the United States and throughout the world.
On a humane level, though, it completely sucks.

I think you guys are going way overboard on the "Oh it's so embarrassing" spiel. I think it's ridiculous that your even bringing it up. What your saying is that a person will get embarrassed because a bench will say their weight out loud and post it in big red print, but that they won't be embarrassed for being just overweight to begin with? A bench saying your weight is the braking point on the situation? If you don't think that everyone already knew you were overweight before you sat on the bench, your wrong.
I don't care if people are fat or not, it's their decision, but to get embarrassed over this, well then just don't sit down.

try being 33 and no longer being overweight but knowing you spent most of your life having all of your weaknesses exposed and still not being able to eat without a sick feeling of someone taking note or not being able to let someone you love look at you even in swim wear let alone any other way with out some form of humiliation. see it from the other side

Awesome! they should also use the crude electricity check where they give your body fat %. It's not horribly accurate, but it would be added info...
BODY FAT %.
AND... it would be an electronic voice set on high to announce the body fat and weight!
We'll get fat people walking and losing weight if we have to yell it out in public!

You know its only a public shame if you look at it like that. Some may be embarrassed by it but they shouldn't, their weight is a real fact of life and that bus stop is just letting you know.

agreed, I dont get how this is shaming. Its just displaying your weight (albeit an inaccurate weight)...its not posting up "Fatty" or yelling "Tubby" when you sit. Its only shaming if you allow yourself to be embarrassed by your weight.

For some people, it's not so easy not to be embarrassed, you know what I mean? There are lots of "real facts of life" that are still humiliating to the people who deal with them, especially when it comes to appearances.

I am not sure I quite understand the outrage. Looking at the picture, I don't see anybody holding a gun to that lady's head and forcing her to sit on that bench. Since many, many bus stops don't have benches, it seems to me that people who don't want their weight disclosed can choose NOT to sit on that bench (and I suppose there might be a few people who are NOT overweight who would nonetheless prefer to keep their weight to themselves. On the other hand, there are probably a number of people who would sit on the bench out of curiosity or who simply could care less (picture my hand raised here). In the U.S., after all, being overweight simply means that you are one of the majority. Sadly, it looks as though the majority will go from "overweight" to "obese" in the not-too-distant future. I don't know that THIS practice is part of the solution to this health crisis, but if it DOES turn out to reduce obesity, I hope that some private company starts advertising this way in the U.S.

read a few of the above comments, this could potentially cause eating disorders, or push someone who is already emotionally distraught to suicide. this is not a positive way to make a change for the better.

I disagree that the bench will potentially make people kill themselves. That is pretty dramatic. If something as simple as sitting on a scale will push someone over the edge, it probably would have happened without the aid of a bus stop bench.
The bench should probably have an off button that turns off the display for 15 minutes or something, because people in public do have a right not to have their weight disclosed.
At the same time, the positive effects of this are valid. Sure, obese people know that they are vastly overweight, but the average american probably doesn't realize if they are or are not.
We live fast paced lifestyles where a portion of the population does not think about their health enough. This is a possible deterrent to that.
Great idea.

I think it's bad news. It's embarrassing and humiliating - how many people want their weight announced to the world even if you aren't fat? Someone else brought up eating disorders- a LOT of people struggle with weight related physical and psychological problems and I just don't see how this is responsible advertising.

this is disgusting if you have ever struggled with your weight you know that the one horrible lasting affect it has is that your self esteem is damaged .You can't do those kinds of things .that could perpetuate eating disorders and numerous other things for instance what if someone was on the edge of a suicidal or homicidal break down and this was the proverbial straw .As crazy as that may sound you would have to suffer with an already tainted body image to know what kind of profound affect it can have and all for a profit .thier aren't enough words for my disgust for this incredible invasion of privacy .

yea this is true, I laughed at this at first, but then again I'm not obese and didn't stop at first to empathize. This is pretty insensitive, overweight people know better than anyone else that they are unhealthy, and anything that might push someone on the brink of an eating disorder or worse is just terrible.
