I'M AN AFRICAN IN NEW YORK!

jamhuri
Welcome to "Little Africa" Harlem New York, This neighbourhood on the 116th block of the island of Manhattan houses a big African community with restaurants, stores, mosques and now one of the most unique boutiques in New York City Bebenoir.
Owner Ibrahima Doukoure introduces us to this vibrant neighbor hood, shows us around his store, some of his designs as well as the some of the clothing lines in his boutique. We get to also kick it with designer Kimathi (Wearing the I Africa New York tee) from the African sports wear line Jamhuri Wear. This designers are striving to share the stories of Africa and African immigrants that they call "Afropolitans" living in the diaspora thro the cult of cloth.
All in a days work!

    • I am from the U.S.A., but have lived in Nigeria for 3.5 years. Nigeria alone with 250 tribal languages and separate cultures must represent a challenge to anyone trying to define an "African culture". I do not want to sound rude. However, I support a true understanding of African culture, as a complexity of interwoven tribal and colonial influences.. Sorry, If I offended you.

No offense taken, but we do understand the complexity of Africa, but as many Ethnic groups that are realised in this different countries or regions.. the truth is we share so much as human beings, me and my partner on the video are each from totally different coast of the continent and thro each others experiences plus friends who come to the store the more we realize that the fundamentals of being African are nearly all the same..and so alike.. that it cuts beyond a lot of barriers, for we share the same foods, art, aspirations, sayings stories just in different languages..hence art becomes a great equalizer.

    • Sure Africa is a huge continent with many different cultures, but I dig what you're doing. I'll definitely stop by next time I am in NYC. Until then I'll post this on my blog (www.mzreport.com) sometime this week - I have quite a few readers in the city. Much love! - Mz. Report

    • And what part of Africa is represented. It is after all a huge continent with many cultures. I am a little sensitive about these broad statements regarding "African Culture". Most people would be hard put to understand the various cultures in one country much less the entire continent.
