The Health Benefits Of Beer

It's called the French Paradox -- the link between the low rate of heart disease among the French and their fat-laden diet was a daily dosage of red wine. Well, there's no denying the results of that study. But what the public doesn't know is that the health value of beer has been known, documented and applied for centuries. But there are folks out there who don't want you to know about it.
According to Mr. Jim Anderson, wine connoisseur, "When you compare the raw ingredients that go into wine and beer, you'll find that wine, on one hand, is made purely from grapes, water and yeast. Grapes are a fine source of sugars, fiber and chromium, but few of those things survive the fermentation and filtering process. Yeast has loads of complex B vitamins, but again, they do not appear in the final product due to filtering."
Beer, on the other hand, is made from grains, water and yeast. Grains commonly used are barley and wheat (with cheaper, mass-produced beers relying on corn and rice), both of which are loaded with a variety of vitamins that survive the fermentation and filtering process. And the vitamin value of the yeast is conserved in the hundreds of unfiltered beers that are on the market -- both on tap and in bottles.
-In November of 1999, The New England Journal of Medicine stated that light to moderate beer drinkers would decrease their chances of suffering a stroke by 20%. They also stated that those who drink one beer a day compared to those who drink one beer a week experience no difference in reducing stroke risks.
-The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (May 1999) reported that consuming moderate amounts of beer would lower one's chances of coronary heart disease by 30-40%, compared to those who don't drink at all. (Beer contains a similar amount of 'polyphenols' -- antioxidants -- as red wine and 4-5 times as many polyphenols as white wine).
-Alcohol has also been attributed to increasing the amount of good cholesterol (HDL) in the bloodstream, as well as helping to decrease blood clots.
-Beer contains vitamin B6, which prevents the build-up of the amino acid homocysteine, that has been linked to heart disease. Those of us who have high levels of homocysteine are usually more prone to an early onset of heart and vascular disease.
-A new study performed at the TNO Nutrition and Food Research Institute in Utrecht indicates that those who drink beer had no increase in their homocysteine level, but those who drank wine or liquor had an increase of up to 10%.
-Beer provides a 30% increase in vitamin B6 into the blood plasma -- something that neither wine nor any other liquor can do.
-Beer is both fat-free and cholesterol-free.
-Beer has a relaxing effect on the body thereby reducing stress and helping you sleep better.
-Beer has proven to have positive effects on elderly people. It helps promote blood vessel dilation, sleep and urination.
*this topic is definitely a debatable one, to say the least. perhaps this article is somewhat biased or hopefully, for all you beer lovers out there, it bears some truth. you be the judge.

English Oatmeal Stout is known to be connoiseur
quality brew. Smoooth. I've never tried the Redbridge Sorghum beer, but if you say it's good, I'll make it a point to eventualy. Sorghum and millet are native American wild grains, and have cancer preventative qualities also.

"This topic is definietely a debateable one..." Not to any Deutchlander or Hollandisher is isn't. I learned how to homebrew my own brewskis 21 years ago. And while susbscibing to a California based homebrew club(who else is so with it,I ask you) I received a lot of mailings which I saved that have fascinating articles on all sorts of related science topics related to biochemistry, health, nutrition etc.Did you Current.com suscribers know that the vitamins, minerals, flavanoids, nucleic acids of wheat and barley are present in their malted grain form ? It's as healthy as sprouted grains, beans, etc. Hops is a bittering herb they use to counterbalance the sweet
taste of the malt. It has preservative qualities in it that
make it ideal for older people to drink, because it has the same preservative function in the human body. The hops makes the blood more alkaline, and less acid which balances the more acidic nature of the solid tissues. The yeast itself is a superfood. I used to
buy yeast to mix with water and make a paste to spread on bread with peanut butter. The yeast fungi
have the complete breakdown of all the trace minerals which are present in the human body and essential for human health. If you ever made your own beer low alchohol by using a hydrometer and added amalyase enzymes to break down the non fermentable sugars into partialy fermentable sugars,
then it would be as good as Guiness Stout draught.
Beeeeaaah. It's Australian for good health, mate ! - 2 years ago

Well, Meth WILL cause you to lose weight! :) Re: Beer, you shouldn't waste your welfare check on Budweiser. May I recommend Shiner, Straub's, or Gennessee? Besides drinking will help you vomit up that hotdog made with God knows what- you really don't need that fat and sodium, anyhow! Not to mention, beer will help you with aerobic excercise- like dancing on top of picnic tables! :)

I worked at a grocery store in high school and there was a retired war vet working there part time. Either weekly or twice a week, he would buy a case of beer. He never called in, he was never sick, he was always in pretty good health during the time I worked with him. I used to joke around with him saying that if he stopped drinking, his body would probably shut down because it wouldn't know what to do with itself. Who would have thought that there could have been some truth to that.
Even after reading that, I still won't touch the stuff. I'm not a fan of drinking something I don't care for until I like it. But to each his own.
