The invisibility of the black atheist

It can be argued that in most African American communities it is more acceptable to be a criminal who believes in God and goes to church on Sunday while selling drugs to kids all week than to be an atheist who has a good job, a good education, who contributes to society and supports his family. In these communities you find more tolerance towards gangbangers, drug addicts, and prostitutes, who pray to God for forgiveness than for honest productive citizens who deny the existence of God. This, for me, is one of the most embarrassing elements of Black culture, our zealous embracement of the God of our kidnappers, murderers, slavemasters and oppressors...

    • That's probably how some Catholics were able to get away with molestation, and why a good number of serial killers have been known to hide behind the facade of religion.

    • From being excluded from one's community to feeling pressured to keep one's 'beliefs' hidden from others, I definitely relate to the ideals discussed within the piece.

Even though I am past the point of shying away from telling others (of whichever race) that I am an atheist, I have no doubt that there are many like myself who are just waiting for someone like them, who they admire, to come out and say they lack a belief in a God (or Gods).

This is why I think it is so important for atheists of African descent to hide there feelings no longer. No, I'm not saying we should bash religion, but, we should be more vocal about who we really are.

Atheists, it is time to come forward.
