Public Opinion: Why be gay?

-
-
- a_roxanne
- added this
What convinces someone in their mind to like the same sex as them?
Is it that the want to be with someone that goes through the same things as them?
Is it because it's just, well, easier?
Why is it?
Just curious to see how different people think on this certain thing.

I did not choose to be gay. For me I didn't wake up one morning and say "I think I'm going to like women today; yeah I think I'll be gay." It is much deeper than that. I guess the better question here is, what convinces you to like someone of the opposite sex? I mean who came up with that anyway? If you can ask a person why did you choose to be gay? You should also be asking yourself; Why did you choose to be straight? I have found most people did not choose their sexuality.

Thats like saying "why like ice cream, or video games?" They are fun and something which are enjoyable... I think the question you should be asking is "Why not be gay" or "Why are straight people so afraid of gay people?"

Some people choose to be gay, others dont
Life is massive a varied,
why be one thing when you can be many
or why be one way when you can be another?
its not a question of Why
its a question of personal feeling or choice!

I'm sorry, it's not my fault.
I don't know what it's like to be gay cause I'm straight. I don't know what it's like to be super tall cause I'm short. I don't know what it's like to be a man cause I'm a woman. I don't know what it's like to have a cat or to smoke or to do whatever because I'm none of those things. - 1 year ago

well lets see...i'm attracted men and i have 2 children by a man that I love but am no longer with...i am also attracted to masculine women (butches) but not feminine women but i dont onsider myself gay or bisexual, so i just say that my sexuality is ambiguous...as for my lesbian, homosexual, and bisexual friends i get different answers some jsut explain tht they were born that way and have always wanted to be with the opposite sex, some have experienced nothing but turmoil with the opposite sex and find it "better on the other side" some liek to have "choices" and other's do it "just for fun" i can however speak for myself when i say that i have always been attracted to masculinity whether it be on a male or female...i have this saying..."In the relationship..I'm the bitch" bitch being synonymous to woman for right now and if a man or a butch woman makes me feel like a woman and i am attracted to them, and we are together as a couple then i am happy and content with my lifestyle.

Yes, I would say that it would be easier to go against commonly accepted values and convention and face discrimination, and really risk your relationships (family and friends), shelter and belongings (if your parents decide to kick you out) and your overall safety as you walk down the street that could be filled with violent homophobes just waiting to take a jab at a "fag". If you want a BJ, it's really the convenient way to go.

The real question is why do you need to believe it's a choice when it so obviously isn't? Usually the answer has to do with logical inconsistencies that arise when one must reconcile one's religious beliefs with reality.
Is it because you think god hates gays, yet it is asinine for a god to hate someone for the way he made them?
Or, is it that you, yourself are struggling with your sexuality, and you need to believe everyone else is too?
These questions are rhetorical. I am not implying anything.
FYI I am an atheist so I only have to reconcile reality with reality. The reality is being gay is not a choice.

dear everyone, this might not be a popular opinion, but please respect my input.
i am a christian, so admittedly im biased, but i am also an actor/dancer, so im around this lifestyle, and have many friends that are gay. God gave people free will. beacause of this, i believe that being gay is a choice, subconsious or not, i think people choose this lifestyle for different reasons. God would not make a creation to be wired to go against his word...(fill in the blanks)...thts why i think its a choice. but even though i believe this...i still love all the gay friends i have, and dont treat them any different than the str8 friends i have. and thts the misconception, that christians hate gay people. and people who do actually hate gay people are not representing christianity the way its supposed to be represented. LOVE the person, and if its appropiate, HATE the lifestyle - 1 year ago

There are a few logic problems with that opinion.
For one thing, there are plenty of examples of homosexuality in the animal kingdom. If you believe in God, animals do not have free will, they are just going by the instincts that God gave them. Therefore, God intended for some animals to be homosexual, because they don't have the free will to decide either way. From this you can make the assumption that homosexuality does not go against his word, because he created it. - 1 year ago

hey man, thanks for the response, but i think u are reading too much into the logical side of things, which unfortunately alot of people who arent christian turn to for answers, through what ive seen, obviously i dont know you so i cant say. in my opinion, Humans are not animals, we are a completely seperate and unrelated entity. So bringing that up does not have any relevance to me, though it is a good point, we shouldnt compare animals "insticts" to real human emotion...and if you dont belive in God, (now this question is not aimed towared you) but how can people say what he created and what he didnt, if you are not in touch God and the bible. Again, it is an opinion, so dont shoot it down. :)

I love Christians but I hate their ignorance, their superstition, their bigotry. I love Christians but I have no respect for them because they abandon their intellect in favor of non-sense.
Imagine someone who claims that individuals choose their sexuality. How can anyone be so ignorant? Ask yourself, did you choose your sexuality? Did you sit down and make a list of pros and cons to determine your sexuality?
Christianity and religion is the source of much of the world's pain, misery, and suffering. It is because of Christian bigotry that gays and lesbians continue to be discriminated against today.
How can anyone claim they love a gay person and then deny them the right to marry the person they love? Can there be anything more hateful than telling two human beings in love that their love is illegitimate?
Some Christians think they to talk a good game with the "love the sinner - hate the sin" crap, but let us be honest. Such talk is only a polite way of saying "I am a bigot, and I am unwilling to abandon my ignorance, my bigotry, my hate."

You're right. Going by the Bible, animals are different than humans.
I'm not religious, but I am familiar with the Bible and Christianity.
Consider this- God gave us sexual instincts and the ability to be sexually aroused. Sexual arousal is involuntary. Free will does not dictate sexual arousal. You cannot decide to get an erection, it just happens. Therefore, you can assume that it's God's will that some men are sexually aroused by other men.
Now, at this point, some Christians will agree with this point of view, but say that gays must use free will to fight their natural God-given homosexual instincts. Like as if it were a disease. But, it's so ridiculous if you think about it.There are so many things that scripture forbids. So many more dangerous and damaging things. Greed and Gluttony are actual deadly sins, yet Christians do not go after obese or rich people the way they passionately persecute homosexuals. It makes no sense.
The Bible only has about 3 or 4 passages that forbid homosexuality. Compared to the ten commandments or the seven deadly sins that have entire books written about them in the Bible. Why all the hate towards something that the Bible barely mentions?

Just because you accept god and the bible as truth, doesn't mean you can automatically dismiss his argument. I mean you can't prove that God exists or that the bible is the word of god or that its actually true history... so to base your opinion on something so absolutely not credible is kind of disheartening. I mean don't you actually have your own thoughts and opinions on this based on what you've come to know and your experience with it? And I know you also can't disprove it, but therefore you can't use it as fact either. I don't know why you're so quick to accept whatever the bible says though...

You should really have a deep talk with one of your gay friends and ask whether it is a choice for them. I assert that it isn't a choice. After hearing their point of view, if you accept it, you might have to revise your belief that god wouldn't create a person who is wired against his word.
I love bacon. I didn't choose to love bacon. I just do. The same sort of thing is true for people who are gay. They just are. That's a trivial example, but I don't choose to be straight either. I just am. I am unable to choose to be gay because I don't have those kinds of feelings for other members of the same sex. It's not a choice.
I don't like the smell of rotting food. It's not a choice.
People do not choose their feelings. It would serve you well in life to come to terms with that, even when thinking introspectively.

You say:
God would not make a creation to be wired to go against his word.So here is the thing. Gay people really are born gay.
I know that it does not fit with your religious beliefs, but frankly, there is a lot about reality that does not fit with most people's religious beliefs.I could prove to you that sexual orientation is not a choice, but I realize that as a religious person that will not sink in. We have to deal with the religious beliefs first, not with reality.
How about this to reconcile the two:
Why do you think the Bible says homosexuality is against God's word?
Have you ever thought that just maybe people might have gotten that wrong?People have used the BIble to justify treating blacks as property, to justify slaughtering Native Americans, to justify going to war against Islam.
I'm sure you would agree that flawed human beings read things INTO the BIble that are not really there.
I am highly familiar with the references to homosexuality in the Bible, and absolutely none of them condemn monogamous relationships between consenting adults of the same sex.
Some of them are about men wanting to commit rape; others are about men with male temple prostitutes; others are about men with little boys; others are about humans abandoning themselves to orgies with no inhibitions; ALL things that are just as condemned when between people of the opposite sex, NONE are actually about homosexuality.
There are even stories of same sex relationships, that while not specifically given a stamp of approval, were not condemned either.
I can provide all of the scripture to back this up.

We have the capacity to be equivalent to that of an animal. Moments through out history have shown that many digress into a barbaric and animalistic state when the current conditions become anarchistic. When hurricane Katrina took place, it only took three days for that environment to erupt. Donner's Party in 1846 and the Andean plane crash involving a Rugby team in 1972 resorted to cannibalism to survive.
There are many other cases where in humanity has shown their ability to devolve into animalistic behaviors whether it is to survive or just out of sheer desire. So are we animals? I am inclined to say yes on many levels; however, most have managed to evolve to a higher level of ability and civilizatory nature but we also have the ability to revert rather quickly.

Mike, I am going to go out on a limb here and throw a curve ball.
What if there are other life forms that exist on other planets outside of our galaxy? What if they don't look humanoid? What if they are far more intelligent and evolved than what we are.
If they have the capacity to travel in space at hyper-speeds from one galaxy to another? Then this would tend to indicate they are further evolved. The possibilities of other life forms is astronomically high as there is a vast amount of unexplored space. If God is an efficient steward, then it would seem that he wouldn't want to waste all of that vast creation.
The most interesting day ever witnessed would be the day an alien space ship landed on earth and all of the Christians scramble to make sense of it. Their bibles would soon take on a different meaning.
So, will that day ever happen? Based on logic and mathematical probabilities the answer is most likely yes! All of humanity would be forced to re-evaluate their perspectives on almost everything they know or think they know especially religion.

What if an animal ate of that same fruit? They to would have been cast out of the Garden of Eden. However, from the looks of things around us, it appears that many animals partook of the fruit as well. Maybe the real question that should be asked is if God created us in his image, then why would we have the ability to procreate if it were not meant to be used? It would seem that the forbidden fruit was a meal intended for consumption to provide the means to an end. Perhaps the whole concept is nothing more than a story concocted to explain how man came to be rather than allowing one to believe that we evolved from one thing to the next and eventually to a monkey or some other form of primate.

Based on all of my observations thus far, I am inclined to believe that neither humans or animals can make a choice as to their sexual orientation. They can make a decision to act this way or that if they are so disposed to do so. In prisons, there are many people that find themselves in a situation where if they desire to have a sexual relationship their options are limited. At that point they can decide to indulge themselves in their options or remain without. If they indulge then obviously they are engaged in homosexual activities but this still doesn't make them gay. It just means they are sufficiently horny to overcome their reservations about such things.
For example: I have a brother that has a male, Boston Terrier. This dog seems to find great delight in trying to mate with their male cat. The cat is not at all pleased or on board with the idea but the dog finds his resistance to be meaningless. If any cat or dog, male or female shows up, he sees them as fair game. This dog is not concerned about the gender but more about the activity. He is quite certain that it is all good. I have seen some people with this same mentality as well.

Wow, well, at least you're honest.
Sexual arousal is not a decision; it's an involuntary reaction.
Do you decide to become sexually aroused when you see someone you are naturally attracted to? Of course not, it's automatic."Is it because it's just, well, easier?"

Some things come naturally. Even if it is not your nature, you must realize that yours is not the only to exist. Some people will go into the nature vs. nurture thing, but really and truly, does it matter? I do not question your preferences, nor do I think anyone should. In a world filled with ugliness and hate, I don't think that any one person, or group of people, can define love, and set its guidelines. So, to answer your question, homosexuality exists because love exists. In a perfect world, I believe that two people will fall in love for what is in their hearts, not what their bodies happen to look like.

Being gay is irrelevant--humanity is going to need all the help it gets when the dead rise from their graves and begin to feast on human flesh. While I don't think that the zombie apocalypse is going to look like Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video, some may disagree.

why be gay? . . .why be Scandinavian? your born that way.
some may not realize it right away or fight against it for societal reasons, but i doubt there are any external factors that influence a "decision" to be gay.Now if anyone here would like to explain why they are into Watersports,
that would shed light on a sexual behavior i never understood. - 1 year ago

for some dudes, their dick dont get hard when they got ladies rubbin up on them! and I believe thats why some men are gay. It's something biological, not something you can just choose.

Why be gay? Same reason. - 1 year ago

The only logical answer to Why is; Why not.
Being gay is not a choice and many fight hard not to be gay which gives the outside world this crazy idea that it is a choice. IF society ever wakes up and realizes that it is not only normal to be gay but healthier in the long run to allow sexual preferences to just naturally develope as they should then there would NOT be all this confusion over whether it is a choice or one is born gay.

Fair Question. Since I had a "serious" girlfriend first, for 4 years, I asked myself the same thing. Why was I becoming attracted to men? And why that certain type of man? [masculine, gentle, sometimes taciturn]
I decided that it was likened to my preference for classical music, and piano music in particular. It does not exclude my love for Jazz. But if I could have married a gay Bach, I would have. - 1 year ago

Why be "heterosexual"? Because you just are. It isn't up for discussion if one if heterosexual it just is. Just as homosexuality. Why is it hard to accept?

you left us with a very good question: why would someone want to trouble themselves with the travails of heterosexual coupling? The movie industry seems to make the pursuit endlessly difficult. I suppose all love is worth it.

Believe me, as a 56 year old man who spent 34 of those years in the closet, actually BEING gay is NOT a choice. And trust me, there's nothing easy about being gay, particularly in non-urban areas. The only choice we gays make is the decision to stay in or come out of the closet.
I will assume that your question is posed innocently enough, without being inflammatory. However, I must say that I'm tiring of these kinds of questions. Why should we gays have to justify our sexuality? Straights certainly don't feel the need.
While one could give you a litany of psycho-babel reasons as to why we are attracted to the same sex, I personally feel no need to dissect and psychoanalyze my -- or anyone else's -- sexuality. It is what it is -- the same as one is a certain race or gender. Do blacks wonder or feel the need to justify why they're black? Asians why they're Asian? Etc., etc. Do men or women analyze their gender? Hmmm...I'm guessing, no. It's no different with sexual orientation.

Good question, Roxanne. I sincerely believe the answer is in our genes, and our sexuality unfolds as early as 5 years old. The same could be said for straight, bisexuals to. We don't know why we like particular sexes, but we simply do.
Conversely, I'm convinced our gender roles are more complex. It's a combination of biological, and psychological. Some women feel like men, and some men feel like women. It's a condition they've experienced their entire lives, and their sexualities are can ben either hetero, homo, or bi.
The mayor of Spokane Washington is a transexual. He has breasts, and loves his wife; however, he's been a heterosexual his entire life.
Do you think a 90 year old male, or female, who hasn't had sex in 30 years has a sexuality?
Good day.

Ksirys is correct, it's not like changing your hair color or getting a piercing, a person doesn't wake up one day and decide they're attracted to the same sex, it's not a choice. A person is born gay and is attracted to the same sex the same way that a heterosexual person is attracted to the opposite sex.

from my experiences, there are an array of possible reasons. but they all seem to boil down to one simple thing, companionship.
companionship with someone you care about deeply and there is not one single factor to point to. if you find someone you can drop all your masks around, you are physically attracted to, and you can sit in silence together at there is nothing awkward about it, you have found a person you can enjoy your life with. and i for one, hope the time you spend together is as wonderful as the moment you made the choice to spend your lives together.
gender means nothing beyond the ability to procreate. everyone who places so much emphasis on gender or gender rolls would find it difficult to step out of the social construct they have accepted. if you cannot or are unwilling to step out of this social construct i can only leave you with this, look for the beauty of the individual and forget any and all labels used to identify yourself or them. and please do not feel the need to put yourself into a box for someone of these socail constructs to assign you a label. simple accept them as they are for who and what they are, an individual consciousness made manifest having an experience in this moment on a little gem of a planet.
beyond that, (and i do fail here more then i care to admit) try to love everyone unconditionally, not in a physical or intimate way but for being another consciousness experiencing this life at the same moment you are experiencing yours. because there are only degrees of separation between you and them.

Your preferences, your likes and dislikes, are natural to you unique to you. No one can control your preferences, not even if you are pressured by outside sources or your culture to like what everyone else likes. Even if you hide it from others, inside you still will feel the same way. No one can control you as long as you don't let them.
It is the homosexuals nature to prefer the same sex, just as it is the heterosexuals nature to prefer the opposite sex. A preference is something that is in the mind, that comes from thoughts. But every human's mind is individual. Genetics does not control the mind, because the mind is not a physical thing, like hair color or height. Why am I heterosexual? There is nothing physically different about me that shows that I will surely be sexually attracted to men or sexually attracted to women. Likewise, there is nothing that shows that I will like mathematics more than writing or dancing more than painting.
Any inquiry into the genetic appearance of homosexuality will just cause more questions. Unanswerable questions, because homosexuality does not "appear." It has always been here and there is nothing wrong about it.
To answer your question, no one chooses too be gay or to be straight. That's just the way they are.

Asking that question is to imply a person has a choice. One has no more choice in this matter than a choice of neurological disorders, learning disabilities or mental retardation.
