Three bombs have exploded in Spain, with at least two believed to have been planted by Basque separatist group ETA. No injuries were reported following the blasts in the north of the country. One bomb exploded outside a bank in Getxo, damaging a cash dispenser and breaking windows. Officials said the homemade device packed into a gasoline tin went off without warning at about 5am. Five hours later, an anonymous caller said ETA had planted four bombs on beaches in Laredo, Ris and Noja as well as at a golf course close to Noja. Police cordoned off the towns and a device exploded near Laredo's beach at around 12:15 pm. It went off on the seafront promenade in the Cantabrian resort. Later in the day a second bomb exploded in Lardeo. The most recent attack by the armed Basque separatist group happened on July 4. The organisation, which is fighting for independence in the Basque region, carried out a bomb attack against a telecommunications centre.

    • This is disturbing. I thought ETA has been scaling down their terrorist activities, esp in civilian places like beach resorts...

One of the beach huts targeted by the bomb attacks.

It's good that no one was injured, an attack at some Spanish beaches could have injured hundreds if not thousands, Maybe this was more about making a point than intentionally trying to hurt anyone?

    • It's a difficult situation, and it seems surreal that this still happens in a "western" European country. I juat went to Spain, and the situation there is very unique. they have many of the modern technologies, but some backwardness not usually associated with a western country is still very prevalent.

    • Spain has had such problems for a long while. 800 people have died since they've started their want for Independence.

Move. Demanding to have land that isn't yours by claiming (I'm guessing) it's no the government's either is stupid. Gather all the money and supplies you can and move to a remote island somewhere...buy it and live. Or go into the rain forest and live as a tribe.

I don't think such a group is smart enough to realize that they will not get their way if they continue on this path. They are just going to be hunted and taken in for questioning and maybe never released.

You never cease to amaze me JJ. The Basque region has been there way before this marvelous conglomeration of Spain ever came to be. You are accurate to say around 800 have died in this 30 year struggle for independence (speaking only of the modern reincarnation of centuries old clashes). But Spain is not an innocent government brought to its knees by 'terrorists.' They are quite complicit in the cycle of violence in fact. Their hard lines and belligerence has been very debilitating to both the Basque region and all of Spain.

And pretendo, to think that all the Basque region needs is education is to completely misunderstand this neverending situation. What the Basque want, primarily I think, is to educate themselves. Of all things, education pretendo? They have an indigenous language that they have fought long and hard to protect. To think that centralized Spanish education systems will alleviate the problems in north Spain is ridiculous.

You can't win by killing people to prove a point.

You know what alters things after a war it's what the "leader" of the two sides do when they sit down and talk about the demands. After heavily loses on both sides they sit and talk about terms of cease fire. Something they could have done long before the bloodshed.

I did not state that the Government of Spain is blameless. I did state that it's pointless and as the years have shown that to be true what they continue to do will not bring about what they want no matter how "rightfully" belonging to them it might be.

Sometimes you have to live within the means that are now provided no matter how unfair it might be. Fair isn't life. Fair is made up in the minds of those that think they are right in demanding what is and isn't fair.

Playing the "Invade" game about war on Terrorist is quite Negative. There are people that are victims of terrorists. I do not want to be one, do You?

Is maybe time for you to go into Iraq or any easily attackable place so you can feel the fear people get every day when they wake up.

Who knows, if you tolerate it this way, one day, it might be at your Door.

This is not war on poor people, it is not war on drugs, it is war on the worst things ever... Terrorism.

Sorry, but I am in favor in fighting against those who terrorize others. If negotiating is no good, then there is no other option. Or perhaps you do know another option against these Militants? These of which you might not care about because you live in a nice safe Neighborhood?

Whoa, Bush vote in the room. Just like the war on drugs the war on terrorism is not winnable. It just gives this administration excuses to invade anywhere they please, which bishop was playing on. Chill.

I'm with you bishop. I've read many of your posts. You are a very introspective dude. I think you make a funny point. Plus, I don't think anyone died in this instance. Bombs aren't funny. Neither is war. Pointedly caustic political satire though is funny. Chill out pretendo.

Sorry to see such negative discussion... I posted this story to let others know that there were recent bombings, but also to let the work know ]more about problems that exist in Europe. There are MANY ongoing issues in Europe that have yet to be resolved and the ETA is just one of them. I have been in various parts of the world and have almost lost my own life because of acts of terrorism. Let us strive to be a more educated and informed global society.
