Russia "ends military operations" in Georgia

There are no signs yet of peace talks, and Russia reportedly remains critical of Georgia's leadership. And military aggression continues as Russian jets have bombed the Georgian city of Gori, killing and wounding civilians and destroying buildings.

Dear Kreker,
Nobody says that Russia is superpower. I'm agree with you that Russia isn't superpower. And Russia wasn't first who started bombing Ossetia in the night on August 8th. So it's more seems that Saakashwili thinks that Georgia is superpower and has right to kill about 2000 ossetians , so he killed 2% of all ossetians it's not a little for this less than georgian nation.
I'd wish no one killed georgian or ossetian or any other nation as well I'm sure against any agressive acts destroying simple people life. And didn't you think that it could be provocation. I guess you read in russian then please visit http://www.vz.ru/top/ .Again and again I ask why Saakashwili started bombing South Ossetia?
Please read ossetians pray for help:

Appeal to the Governments and peoples of the world
Our people have been systematically exterminated for the past 19 years by the fascist Georgian regime, and their inhuman atrocities have been neglected by the world for the sake of geopolitical interest of the United States. The conflict is being resolved in compliance with international law. However, skillfully applying falsification of historical facts and political insinuations, under a patronage from the US government, Georgia misrepresents reality to the world.
As of today, the major part of South Ossetia has been eradicated by Georgian aggressors. Our elderly, women and children continue to die. The total death toll is unknown as the Georgian side was opening heavy fire at those trying to help the wounded. Including children.
The unmatched Georgian brutality has been vividly displayed in 1991-1992, when they have been firing point-blank at South Ossetian civilians – the Zar tragedy can never be forgotten, a bus full of people shot dead - elderly, women and children. They shot a three-year-old boy trying to hide under his mother’s body.
What can we talk about with Georgia? How can we forgive burying people alive, burning people, and torturing people with refined methods? After all this, the world is silent and the Georgians continue killing innocent people. Saakashvili doesn’t feel sorry for anybody, even his compatriot Georgians. The notions of "people" and "meat" are not too different for him, and probably he prefers the latter.
For South Ossetia there is only one way to survival - a recognition of its independence by the world community. We appeal to all the good people in the world not to be indifferent to the fate of the Ossetian people."

russia did not quit. It is not a superpower first of all. It is a big country but close to failed rather a superpower. The petrol money made it think that there is nothing impossible for Russia and EU reluctance to the agreesive bhaviour strenghtenned this believe. We Georgians are small nation but we resist. Now we seized the fire but Russians continue to bomb railroads, burn forests and bridges, rob our shops and homes. This is not war any more this is mob attack.

In fact South Ossetia was ruined by Georgia. Till today thousands refugees come to Russia from South Ossetia. On August 8th old men and children who lost their houses after Georgian carpet bombardment tried to find protection in Russia. They ran to Russia but Georgian soldiers continued bombing this column of refugees. It was killed over 150 medical personnel from Red Cross while them were saving ossetians.
My heart was breaking to see thousans of crying ossetians near Georgian Embassy in Moscow. They praid Saakashvili to stop bombing and killing their old parents and children left in the South Ossetia (almost all able to work ossetians work in Russia and send money for living to South Ossetia to their parents and children).
SAAKASHVILLI IS FASCIST INDEED AND THE BIGGEST LIAR!!!
I don't understand why American reporters can't go to South Ossetia and say true situation. If Russia was agressor then thousands of refugees run to Tbilissi and not to Russia. - 3 years ago

May our Commander-In-Chief of the United States Armed Forces proceed stratagemically in response to the one responsible for issuing this strike on Georgia.

Why was there no mention of the fact that the major oil pipeline runs through this area to Russia? The only reason given was "to defend our people, from aggressors". Can anyone say Iraq?

There is no pipeline running from Georgia to Russia. The pipeline that crosses Georgia from Baku is the only pipeline ferrying oil from the Caspian Sea Basin that doesn't belong to Russia. Russia didn't attack or damage that pipeline, this pipeline has strictly nothing to do with the conflict.

As a current.com editor, I keep a close eye on what's being added on to the site throughout the day. I saw this breaking news story come through the feeds and before I clipped it, I did a thorough search on current.com to see if any users had clipped it first (which is something we encourage everyone to do). But, as will happen on occasion, it hadn't been clipped yet, and in the interest of breaking this important development onto the site and Current:News as quickly as possible, I posted it and put the Breaking News badge on it to alert our users. Trust me, if a user clipped it first, it would've been someone else's story that I added the breaking news badge to instead.
You can read more about how news breaks on current.com on the current blog post here: http://current.com/items/89036777_let_s_talk_staff_participation_algorithmic_sou...
I hope this helps clear things up for you. Holler back if you have any more questions or concerns!
Thanks!

Believing Russia is the most stupid thing ever.
- UN and US ask for cease fire; Russia continues,
- French President and Finish President ask for Cease Fire; Russia Continues. Then Russia decides to Stop War and then claims... "I have reached a decision to halt the operation to force the Georgian authorities to peace,"
These behaviors are just cocky and arrogant.

We'll invade and distroy half your country - but, as with Chechnya, we'll withdraw now and to keep basic face with the world community whilst arming to the teeth a band of thugs to do the real dirty work. Russia wiped out 20% of the Chechnya (sometimes using internal Rebels loyal to them to carry out their torture and killing).
In Ukraine they clearly tried to poisen the 'anti-Russia' candidate leaving him totally disfigured - he still won so Russia cuts gas to the country till it finally gets it way.
The world is trying it's best to stop Iran getting nuclear capabilities - Russia is in there selling them any technology it can get some cash for.
Putin is really starting to show his face now - the world needs to watch this man carefully. He has total power and can essentially do as he wishes - wrapping it up to make himself look wonderful to the Russian public through all the media channels he now controls.

It was always a seperatist battle. There are two de facto autonomous zones (sorry to the Americans for using big words, think of them as break away states) in Georgia, South Ossetia is just one of them, the other is Abkhazia to the west, on the Caspian sea.
Russia had citizens present when Georgia invaded, so deployed it's troopsin a peacekeeping capacity. The media has just lied a whole load. Again...
Abkhazia has also been reported to be preparing for Georgian attacks, but Russian forces have seemingly got the upper hand now.
Everyone should take a long look at the double standards in the media right now, and think long and hard before mindlessly braying for a war on whoever they have read is a threat that day. Think for yourselves, don't let the media do it for you. Unless thats what you want...
