    • The long and hard fought campaign was over and the result was well worth the wait. Together, under the leadership of President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and a Democratic Congress, we will chart a better course to build a new economy.
Election Day is finally over, and we now know who our next President of United States will be. Hopefully, America has made wise decisions. I hope the American people really thought about the issues in play before casting their vote on November 4th. It’s sad that the reality of how much people think about their political choices is less than studied. Some of us put more thought into whether to take out a payday advance than what the issues are. Listen to this brief audio snippet for instance. It‘s a recent episode of “The Howard Stern Show,” posted courtesy of BPM Deejays of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Roving Reporter Sal roamed the streets of Harlem, New York to get the opinions of men and women, to see whether they supported Barack Obama or John McCain for President. In actual fact, this was to determine whether African-Americans would automatically vote for Barack Obama simply because he’s black. Sal reverses the candidates’ positions on issues like the pro-life argument, stem cell research, the war in Iraq and who Sarah Palin is. Shockingly, many of the responses were brainless. Sal gets people to admit that they support Obama despite what policies he represented. This discussion has exposed something truly depressing. The truth is that many people are uninformed as to the issues. Many people try to play a part of popular opinions. I just hope that during the elections, you really thought about it.

    • It's been a monumental night. As happy as I am to see Obama win, as a McCain2000 supporter, I'm equally sad to see what this man has turned into.

Undoubtedly, in the long term, I'll appreciate tonight's results more and more. But as of now, it seems a little bittersweet.

    • THank you America, I thank you and the world thanks you. I worked the polls today, people were enthused, excited, participating, anticipating. Crowds where there had been just a few at a time in elections past. It was a push of the people to overcome the election thefts, the crimes, the horrors of Republican Rule.

American people took back the nation.

NOW, Push to IMPEACH Bush and Cheney before they can pardon all the criminals and themselves.

We can not allow the "forgiveness" like we did when Ford pardoned Nixon after Watergate, or when Clinton ignored George Bush Sr.'s Iran Contra affair...because now we know that if we don't hold criminals accountable, they come back and do bigger crimes the next time.

IMPEACH!! DEMAND IT NOW! DON'T LET EVEN ONE OF THEM OFF THE HOOK.

This is where Democrats need to be tough on crime, white collar, stealing from the middle class and poor to line the pockets of the rich, killing innocents around the world, sending our kids off to die in illegal wars, spying on our own people, torture and redition, the undoing of our constitution, treason. We must have accountability and now is the time, we have no election to worry about now.

If Pelosi won't do it, impeach her too.

but today, 11/4, my tears are met with a sense of relief and assurance in our leaders. No more living in fear

when i read all of these responses from all across the nation and even the world, i finally wept tears at how beautiful a UNITED people of these United States of America really were.

Our Voices was heard....change is coming!!!

Thank you Lord! Change is coming!

It's so great to see him rockin up there. everyone believes in him so much...!

that said, let's hope he doesn't let us down.
So anyway now let's get beyond the whole symbolic 'hooray for the first black guy to win the presidency' thing and on to getting every single soldier the hell out of foreign lands, all the depredations of the bush admin rolled back, etc., and making all the stuff we believe in him for actually happen.

    • "So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers – in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House – a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, “We are not enemies, but friends…though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.” And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn – I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world – our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down – we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security – we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright – tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

For that is the true genius of America – that America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow."-- President Elect Obama

    • Before I could even comment on this site I have already read some nasty comments about myself and other John McCain supporters. It comes as no surprise on this site.

Although I strongly disagree with our nations choice tonight, I am happy to see our democracy in action.

For the past six months on this site I have heard every left wing conspiracy about how Bush will declare marshall law, blackwater will be in the streets, and the elections won't happen, etc. Can we now get back to reality?

As a military man I have been called a murderer, as a conservative I have been called a bigot. But let me say this, congratulations Barack Obama, you are now my commander in chief. You've proven you can talk the talk but now it's time to walk the walk. You've got four years to earn your stripes, and although the majority of the United States Military does not agree with your policies we are prepared to answer your call. Don't unravel what we've bled for in Iraq, don't over do it in Afghanistan just to prove you can bite. Don't cut our budget in half and expect us to be the best in the world. Just do the right the thing. Don't sell out to your party, just be our chief, and earn our respect by respecting us. We don't fight for political parties, we fight for the United States.

    • dabne:

Dabne I think what you saw was what is known as the netroots, those who are firebrand liberals who are at the periphery of the party in some respects in the same way Sarah Palin supporters are quite a bit different than moderate conservatives. They have been under the heel of the other "base" the neo-conservative movement in America. They weren't happy it was agonizing and they simply felt rightly or wrongly the very human feeling of repricosity. That anger that ended in an outpouring of frankly inapropriate cursing and vitriol. Expect that anger to be bled away I think that you will find that your opinions will be treated far more civily in the America we wake up to in the morning than was the case for liberals after the contentious 2000 election which never recieved closure for many people of all political persuasions in America. We have seen an electoral mandate for the first time in twenty years. We have perhaps seen a re alignment of political will in this country and we have seen truly historic levels of participation and precedents being set. Be proud be ready for more civil discouse don't give up here. Also please try and leave some space in your own debates. Some right wing claims this election cycle were truly truly dubious and its not hard to imagine why thier were many moved to anger. Clamor of redbaiting, racial inuendo's, gutter populism, and allowing cries of epiphets and threats of violence that were allowed to proliferate at McCain Palin rallies are not the political equivelant of some one sided discussion on a progressive website like Current and I don't think it's fair to draw any such comparison.

On your military service, NO ONE SHOULD EVER EVER DERIDE IT! I went to two Obama rallies personaly watched many more and saw many surrogate rallies and at each negativity was not allowed about McCain's service record in fact thier were pains made to point out that service and to aplaud notable breaks from Bush in McCain's career such as on Climate Change and Torture. He wouldn't even allow a single boo at the second rally I atended. he simply stopped his speach and called for the jeering to end calling it out as not needed.

Some think the lack of balance wont be a good thing. I dont know. But it is CLEAR that THIS COUNTRY IS TIRED OF REPUBLICANS. And I think that Bush had a some influence over that...

And the saddest part, is that a lot more peoples' true colors are shining in the wake of a half black, half WHITE president being elected.

How would I be a troll if I have consistently contributed on this site for the past six months. Is it because I share a different opinion? Does that make me a troll? I have no respect for you. Sorry to say, after hearing all your bullshit that you've been crapping out, nothing feels great than to have the results shoved in your face.

Dabne, I don't give a crap that you don't like me. Some of the stuff you've said here is more vile than some cuss words. You always use the "it's my opinion" argument when you're cornered. And wow, you get picked for TV more than me. Hope you feel that you're superior than me. Good for you.
