Well it turns out that the ship was actually a Thai fishing boat which had just been seized by pirates hours before it was sunk by the Indian navy.
The navy defended its actions saying that they saw pirates on the boat and they acted in self defense as they were begin fired upon by the 'mother ship.'
Oh! the Irony!!

I think its time to load up a few random cargo vessels with armed commandos. Then lay and wait to get hi-jacked by Somali pirates. After wiping the attacking pirates out, spread the news. This way, the pirates will think twice before attacking another ship.

The Indian Navy is sending the pirates a clear message: "The Time for BULLYING the WORLD is OVER. Hostages or no hostages. We WILL STOP YOU!"
We all agree that it is tragic that innocent lives are being lost. Pirates were killing them as well. It is an International problem that is up to India's Navy to stop due to logistics.

Those crazy Indians...
Pirates, innocent fisherman being attacked by pirates, innocent fisherman getting attacked by pirates then sunk by a foreign navy after being mistaken for the pirates they were just attacked by...
This would be funny if it weren't so embarrassingly tragic.

The world is outraged that this would happen in our day and time. The response has to been to send warships. This by a number of nations.
But these warships are just patrolling, willy nilly, most I'm sure with orders not to shoot if doubt remains. You can see it coming. More time, more warships, more accidents.
Until Solalia develops the ability to deal with this threat from within their borders, leaves the world trying to deal with it as is. Whats happening now isn't going to work.
Until we can figure out something better, how about the UN organize these warships to protect convoys? Worked before. At least to a degree.
Convoys would be slow & inefficient. They would also be better than what we are doing now. Are the pirates bold enough to take on a convoy with a warship along to protect the herd?

I think the time for negotioation is over.
"Not only are they winning, but the forces of law and order are almost completely paralyzed. The pirates have seized dozens of ships, extracting ransoms that total about $30 million this year alone. Fourteen ships, including a Saudi Arabian supertanker carrying two million barrels of oil, are still anchored off the Somali coast awaiting ransom."

Oh dear. I feel bad for the original crew - as if it's not bad enough to be captured by pirates, but to be shot at by the authorities too. I hope the surviving crew members will be compensated in some way.

I have to admit that I jumped on the original story (on this very site), like a ravenous seafarer to his lost lost wench.
This happens all too often in our high octane 24hour ever ubiquitous media. Jouno's simply don't have the time to get all the facts, then bam, it's out there.
The retraction on page 27 rarely gets read...

Unless I'm very much mistaken, the pirates, deplorable as their actions are, have not murdered any of their hostages, or any of the ships' crews.
Navies must show this same restraint when operating in the Gulf of Aden.
They are very heavily armed, and need to use only necessary force to get the job done.

It's sad that some of the crew members were hurt or killed. But someone has to stand up to the pirates. All the countries with ships in that area should adopt a no negotiation policy with the pirates. And the navy's from the different countries should issue shoot to kill orders on the pirates.

Oh man. That's not good at all. 14 are still missing and they only found out about this because some fishermen found one of the missing Cambodian sailors four days after the "sinking of the mother ship."
