The car of the future promised for October

The car of the future is almost here. Aptera Motors has rolled out the first pre-production model of the 2e, an all-electric three-wheeled two-seater that gets the equivalent of 200 mpg and goes 100 miles on a charge.

    • You can say it's not "your style", but there's never been anything like this before, so what's your negative reaction based on?
I love it, this car is so different, and very cutting edge.
      200 mpg?
      Yes, please.
When do I get one for my driveway?

    • How would these things handle in the snow and ice??? I am just wondering how the people in areas that experience a lot of snow would do in these. These are the reasons that people in areas of the countries still buy trucks. What do they have in the works for people that make their living in places that have a more harsh environment.
I think it is really cool though, and would love it.
I am also wondering the saftey of a child riding in it, there are laws about children riding up front. Just a thought for us current parents.....

They have a car in hybrid model that is not 100% electric...I think they will solve the chance of the electric one going kaput by making charge cells that you can carry in the "trunk". It also only requires a plug...you know, like the one for the toaster? Or so I saw on the website.

    • Hey, do you see what I see? The one vehicle that just may put Hummer out of business! I say good riddance. With the demand coming, I wouldn't doubt they raise the price, either.

Still, its a beautiful piece of engineering. I been checking the Aptera since 2005 when they weer but an American dream. Its good to know this lovely invention will not only bring money back to the US, but also bring to light a real contender for alternative energy, fuel efficient vehicles built here, as well.

Obama should give them some money or tax breaks to take their operations mass scale and provide jobs.

    • 100 miles isn't much, especially if you're living in a driving intensive area like SoCal or if you plan on doing any trips.

Honestly, at this fucking juncture, we need to think about how we're going to deal with the damage global warming is going to cause. It's too late to prevent it, it was too late in 2005. You can thank the Republicans for that.

i feel the opposite. i love modest cars from the sixties through the eighties. they largely had a functional aesthetic. cars before and after look exaggerated, turgid and goofy.

    • hmmm. i love how the article says it will be "relatively affordable (at $25,000 to $45,000)" thats not relatively affordable at any rate unless your name starts with bernard and ends with madoff.

The Aptera 2 Series vehicle (electric and hybrid) will range in price from the mid-$20,000s to the mid-$40,000s, depending on options and powertrain.

    • i dunno...maybe they should make the car look more "normal"...jus seems somewhat unrealistic to look like a space pod or something lol

I like the idea that it's hybrid and efficient though thumbs up!

Its not a hybrid. it's just electric. the design is based around that of a bird's body, allowing for the best air flow and low coefficient drag. This is all explained on their website.

I get the whole aerodynamic design...but it'd jus stick out like a sore thumb on the road. Some people still drive cars from the sixties and seventies...imagine grandma's boat driving next to this super-futuristic car! lol Funny picture lol

    • consider all the resources that go into the production of these though. better to resist car ownership entirely and let them taper out than continuously replace them with the 'greener' model.

i mean, obviously if cars are going to be manufactured and purchased anyway, these are the superior choice. but we're getting really good at embracing false security.
