LAGOS, Nigeria (CNN) -- At least 84 Nigerian children have died after ingesting teething medicine that contained a solvent typically found in antifreeze, the country's health minister said Friday.

Some 111 babies and children have been sickened since November by the tainted batch of My Pikin, which was found to contain diethylene glycol, which is used in some antifreeze and brake fluid.

They used the chemical from antifreeze?! Unbelievable. Its hard to believe the difference between life and death in this situation is a matter of a few carbons in the structure of the chemicals. Chemistry is amazing.

    • I don't even know what to say. These kinds of things will continue to happen as long as we continue to sell the world an image of material wealth equaling power and influence- which equals happiness. The same mentality that allowed such a drug to be used without the scrutiny and research that could have prevented this disaster exsists in our densley populated urban centers. 'Money = respect. Respect = self worth'. The world's problems are multi-faceted and deeply connected. We could begin to solve them all by simply telling each person how important they are; simply for exsisting, no strings attached.

    • This is not a new occurrence. It is just another symptom of legacy of colonization in many African countries. Africans are just not perceived as people. But I suppose people will blame this on the Nigerians in someway, as is the case with most issues that surface from the world's most resource rich continent. I don't know what is more deplorable, that these things continue to happen with no penalty, or the indifference or even hostility towards them when it does.

    • Its as if these corporations that produce these tainted medicines want people to die; like some massive population control program.

"the country is full of thieves and thugs." not disagreeing with that because I know Nigeria has a lot of corruption. But is that justification for the deaths of the children that probably have nothing to do with the corruption? Most of the corruption is in the government anyway.

    • There should be multiple fell safe steps in the plants to prevent this mix ups of the wrong chemicals...just unforgivable...these poor babies. The old wives remedy was "rub a little whiskey on the gums". What happened to quality control?

    • We as a world can't even protect our own people from contaminations, yet we feel we're capable of starting wars overseas and spending money on worldly things...

    • These guys got the book, but it was in China, and Zhang Yujun sold 600 tons of melamine-tainted “protein powder.” 600 tons!!!!

Now "At least 84 Nigerian children" die from teething medicine. WTF!?!?!?!

Loosing a baby has got to be one of the worst things that could happen to somebody. :(
