Castro's prolonged silence after months of prolific column writing had contributed to speculation that the ailing 82-year-old was on his death bed.
He did not disclose the reason that he had not written a column, or "reflection" as he calls them, since December 15, after averaging nine a month in 2008.
Castro wrote that he had met with Argentine President Christine Fernandez on Wednesday near the end of her three-day visit to Havana and told her the revolution that put him in power on January 1, 1959, had outlasted 10 U.S. presidents.
He spoke of his admiration for Obama, who took office on Tuesday, replacing George W. Bush, and is the United States' first black president.
"I expressed that personally I had not the least doubt of the honesty with which Obama, the 11th president since January 1, 1959, expressed his ideas, but in spite of his noble intentions there remained many questions to answer," he said.

Just by mentioning the idea that he is open to dialogue, Obama opened doors, paving the way to peace.
The man has more diplomacy skills in his pinky than Bush could fit into a hundred of his fake Texas ranches.

I'm glad Obama is such an encouraging representation of the new administration. I just hope people don't believe he is the cure-all for every issue we're facing right now. I don't mean to be a party pooper, and I'm excited about it as well, but putting him on an incredibly high pedestal could be counter-effective. He was elected because a majority of the US believes he can get the ball rolling on the problems that we face, and that's good. But Obama doesn't have a magic wand (or a lightsaber, contrary to the action figure allegedly made of him). He's human like the rest of us.

I completly agree with the following statement:
"I expressed that personally I had not the least doubt of the honesty with which Obama, the 11th president since January 1, 1959, expressed his ideas, but in spite of his noble intentions there remained many questions to answer," he said. - 3 years ago

This is fantastic, it's such a momentous turnaround, really really important historically. It's great to be living in a time where we can witness these things that our kids' kids will learn about in their history classes.

If anything should make Americans wonder if they choose poorly it should be the adulation of people like Fidel. If dictators cheer the election of our president something is wrong.

Yes, Castro's picture is outdated at the top of the page. He is very aged at this point and weak.
Why do we think a lot of smart, talented Cubans left...some in rickety boats endangering their lives?
FREEDOM!!! I think humans are born wanting freedom. Castro wanted to be the "father" who tells everyone what they can and cannot do. Lets call it what it is, a DICTATOR. Some people felt secure in that while others escaped any way possible.
Miami is now little Cuba. Castro's brother has taken over and is still advised somewhat by Fidel. Hopefully, a seed of freedom can be planted and nurtured there so that families can re-connect with their families.

Great news, i spent 8 months living in Havana & Trinidad 5 years ago. It's a splendid country with great people. The Cuban people are tired and jaded. Let's hope they open dialogue in the future, ease the embargo's and perhaps make the Island a better place.

how many of you out there have been adversely affected by castro? can you comment for us so that we can understand the reason for all of the hatred for this guy?
i've studied the history, but have never heard it first hand.. does or did he torture and imprison his people? is he still doing so? i'd love to hear about it from someone who has experienced life in cuba.. wonder if anyone wants to comment.. hope so..

wrknonit:
In a nutshell:
The idea of communism is fair and beautiful. But it doesn't work, nor the economy, nor the human nature part. Fidel Castro is the biggest megalomaniac ever, he trusts no one, never gave power to the people. Only he new what was good for the people. In order to safeguard communism, he destroyed the lives of all those who didn't think like him. By life destruction I don't mean torture/death, I mean that you would loose EVERYTHING, you would be left with nothing, it was psychological death (plus anything you owned). Castro is worse than the inquisition, destroying all non-believers (in Holy Castro). Just read any old speech by Castro, and you'll see his extreme hatred towards anything that would disagree with him. Sad as it is, he did wonderful things for Cuba, but he has turned into the worst that can happen to Cuba. - 3 years ago

I'm sure the major news networks will have a field day with this in the days to come.
But hey, I do like seeing the support of countries for our president, I hear a lot of talk radio pundits speak as if other countries liking us is a bad thing, which is insane. I'm excited to see a big shift in our foreign policy to...ummm...that one thing, what's it called?...Gosh it's been so long...DIPLOMACY! That's it!
A charismatic approachable leader may be just the thing to get our foot in the door to help work out global issues collectively with other governments.

I thought this guy died already? But seriously, I don't see why Americans hate Cuba so much. We trade with China and their government is far worse than Castro any day in my opinion.

One question, Castro said, was "how can a wasteful and consumerist system par excellence preserve the environment?"
Oh Snap! Let's prove this mo-fo wrong!
