Arrests made in massive, $390/hour Video Relay Service scam

he problem is that VRS still relies on independent companies to act as interpreters for deaf callers who then ask the government for reimbursement for those services. This opened the door for potential scammers to fraudulently bill for calls, and that's exactly what happened. Arrests were made in nine states and involved the owners and employees of seven companies. In nearly all of the indictments, the defendants were charged with allegedly generating fraudulent VRS minutes to submit for reimbursement, either by making them up completely or by dialing into various phone numbers to sit and listen to nothing—what one company referred to as "rest calls." Another company allegedly made "marketing calls" in order to advertise its VRS services, but the true purpose was to merely stay on the phone to generate fraudulent minutes.
