Emotions Are Heightened on TV: This American Life

Host Ira Glass reveals that he didn't initially believe anything could be gained by bringing "This American Life" to television. It wasn't until he started to see early location footage that he realized something: actually seeing the people interviewed added an entirely new emotional dynamic that radio couldn't achieve on its own.

Inspired by the award-winning Chicago Public Radio show of the same name, "This American Life" travels the country in search of compelling stories told by everyday people in their own words - with a little help from host and series creator Ira Glass. Each episode features a quirky cast of characters, from a cloned Brahman bull to a Chicago hot dog vendor, brought together by the unique theme that connects their unforgettable tales.

    • I really mean no disrespect in this post what-so-ever. I am a huge fan of This American Life. I have been listening to the radio program for years. So when I heard it was coming to Current I got super excited. Problem is, all the episodes I have seen on there have been reruns from the Showtime tv program. I'm a little confused. Did Current get sold? I hope yall release new shows because I've seen all the Showtime episodes. Again, no disrespect towards anyone, Im just kinda confused.

      Hey Wooz, Sorry for any confusion and, seriously, thanks for asking!

      Here's what happened: Current acquired rights to air the two seasons of This American Life produced by TAL with Showtime - those are the only episodes for TV that have been made. (A lot of people hadn't seen them during that time on Showtime, or on DVD, so we were very excited to have a chance to show them on Current.)

      Thanks for your question - hope that clears it up. I hope you enjoy these newer interviews with Ira Glass, which Current did just produce to accompany the series.
