SF Music Scene Examiner: The Dead play Shoreline, and win

One could argue the overall nostalgia of The Grateful Dead (now known simply as The Dead) is topped only by that of writing about them. Perhaps owners of the largest set of critics in music over the past four and a half decades, The Dead will forever be subjects of impassioned fan debate - through voice, but especially words.

This spring has provided plenty of argumentative topics, as the band is in the midst of its first official tour in over five years. Since the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995 original members of The Dead - bassist Phil Lesh, guitarist Bob Weir and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann - have continued to tour, both separately and together at times, attempting to keep alive the the glue that originally fastened their fan base together. 2009 sees a new energy and revived attitude as Lesh, Weir, Hart and Kreutzmann have welcomed two permanent fixtures into the family - keyboardist Jeff Chimenti (RatDog, Les Claypool's Frog Brigade) and guitar virtuoso Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers Band).

It was with this line up and thick anticipation that Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View played host to The Dead's twenty first show of their spring tour Thursday night - a favorite West Coast haunt since the 1980's. Having played Shoreline the previous Sunday, four days off provided plenty of time for rumors and rest.

As many know, part of The Dead's culture has and always will be the "scene". Parking lots, campgrounds, any venue-surrounding area; pre and post-show these spots are transformed into mini communities where fans gather to party, buy and sell wares and have an all-around good time. Different venues exercise different levels of enforcement, and Shoreline's efforts tend to lie center of both extremes. On Thursday, people were allowed to operate primarily at normal, with the occasional group of police (event staff don't count) making the required rounds and hassling a few unlucky concert-goers.

Despite the ample amount of pre-game festivities (lots opened at 2pm) perfect weather and a great vibe made the hours leading up to show time seem like minutes, and the crowd found themselves easily and politely filing into the Amphitheatre around 6:30pm.

Prior to tour The Dead rehearsed some 150 songs from their monstrous library to bring out on the road; making song and set list predictions (a practice fans enjoy and take very seriously) nearly impossible. Previous shows this tour displayed unique and appropriate selections, so it was no surprise to see Thursday's first set include five pre-1975 Dead tunes. Opening with an upbeat Jack Straw and U.S. Blues, The Dead mellowed things out with smooth versions of Ship of Fools, Friend of the Devil, and the first portion of Standing on the Moon. Perhaps sensing a decrease in energy (but really, just doing what The Dead do) the band tore into an excellent Terrapin Station before finishing the 'Moon and thus the first set.

Set two is why people continue to see this band. The sun had set and the stars were out - the newest of which was Warren Haynes. Haynes currently has the toughest job in music as it's impossible to duplicate what Garcia brought and meant to The Dead. However, no one can argue Haynes' effort and respect for Garcia, just as no one can argue The Dead's trust and confidence in Haynes. This was evident from the first notes of set opener Estimated Prophet through the encore of Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain, and Deal. Highlights included a fantastic Dear Mr. Fantasy along with a stellar Morning Dew - only the second time played all spring tour. Hayne's work throughout was nearly flawless, as he was successfully able to keep jams original while maintaining the "Dead sound" fans came to hear. Hayne's voice could not be more different than Garcia's but it works well and compliments Weir and Lesh nicely (both of whom, vocally, sound better than ever).
