"When it hit me it knocked me flying and then was still going fast enough to bury itself into the road," Gerrit Blank said in a newspaper account. Astronomers have analyzed the object and conclude it was indeed a natural object from space, The Telegraph reports.

nuh uh!
What is red hot, fall from the sky, bounces off someone's hand, but buries itself in the ground causing a foot-wide crater? Nothing is.
I decline to believe that anything would bounce off a small child's hand and cause a 1-foot crater in the ground.
Two words: nuh. uh.

It bounces off his hand but still has enough velocity to make a 1 foot crater the ground? I'm not a physicist, but that doesn't sound right to me. It was allegedly traveling at 30k mph when it hit, according to the Telegraph article.
I just don't think it "bounced." I will accept that it scraped him as it went by. Perhaps the "bounce" is a translation error.
Perhaps I think too much.
From the original article:
"Gerrit Blank, 14, was on his way to school when he saw 'ball of light' heading straight towards him from the sky.
"A red hot, pea-sized piece of rock then hit his hand before bouncing off and causing a foot wide crater in the ground."

The only way he'd still be alive is if it did, in fact, just graze him. I'd go with a translation error as well.

I wonder if he gets to keep it, like a homerun at a baseball game, or if it doesn't count cause he dropped it, of course Germans don't play baseball so their rules are probably different

Iwonder if this has anything to do with the military making meteorites and space rocks classified? This is still on the Current site, back about 5 or 6 pages. Also Japanese probe to hit moon and other strange space related stories on TV. What is the big picture???

I feel so stupid. If I were in his place, I would consider a meteor that just barely MISSED my hand and DIDN'T send me flying OR leave a scar to be significantly cooler. I have no sense of adventure where pain is concerned...could be the 12 years of arthritis talking, though...

That's just too cool! Yeah, I hope he gets to keep it to show his grandkids.....That and the newspaper article would make a nice display, of course with a picture of him and his scar. It'll be on the Antique Road Show in 100 yrs.....lol. way cool...

i wonder if that kid has an imagination that i had when i was 14 years old. I was really into comic books. So if that would have been me, I would be fantasizing about the special powers that meteor might have given me :P silly but its the first thought that entered my mind when just reading the title. Great story though. I hope the kid gets to keep the pea sized meteor since it did travel through space and into his hands :P

If I'm not mistaken, he was actually hit by a meteor. It's considered a meteorite once it hits the earth, right? So was he the first person to touch a Meteor?

Nah. In the past at least one other person was pegged in the chest while watching TV in a recliner.
It's not that surprising considering the planet is constantly bombarded by rocks.
