Being labeled "China's" dirty secrets" doesn't quite encompass the "who" of it when you consider how intimately the U.S. and other national corporates are so closely tied in to quantities of materials cited as supporting these destructive industrial practices, and the magnitude of the disparagement being so thoughtlessly, heartlessly, caused.
While only touching on the scope of the issues here, I found this journalistic piece quite illuminating -and- moving.
Apple has been in the news time and again for some long stretch over the n-hexane issues, and even recently is still playing pretty dumb about it. And although they are strong participant in this regard, there are several, meaning many many, other major corporate participants. And they are all doing similarly in Africa in the Rep of Congo and adjacent nations there.
And we just keep buying their crap.
Treewolf just posted a Ted video "Van Jones: The economic injustice of plastic" where at one point Van talks about our waste plastic being shipped back there and what happens to it, and importantly 'who' is effected by it and how. I recommend finding that and watching it.
I just have to say, it was quite moving see those people's reactions in that village near the end of this video. It seemed to me like those people were so... well the word "relieved" doesn't quite catch it... as if to be witnessed for the first time "by the outside" in their lonely plight. Like if I turned to you and said, jeez, thank you for acknowledging me and validating this insanity for me, you'd think by what the boss tells us that we are out of our minds to even think that we have anything to be concerned over here.
I mean that is just so sic I cannot express it.That woman who threw herself down in protest, who was so casually dismissed by the corporate admins as 'that's nothing, don't worry about her', ...is one smart and courageous person. That was about as clear a message as you could communicate regardless of any language barriers. In the single moment she had on camera, her actions spoke volumes.
I just don't have the words. Thank you for posting this. I hope a lot of folks stop by to watch it.
