Residents in panic as Indonesian volcano erupts

One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, Mount Lokon, erupted on Tuesday. It has caused panic among villagers, but no evacuation has been ordered so far. Two villages of about 10,000 people each have been affected by the ash, which is now no longer being emitted, AFP quotes volcanologists from a monitoring post near the volcano on Sulawesi Island as saying. Lokon’s eruption in 1991 killed a Swiss tourist. When the volcano erupted in July, with huge clouds of ash as high as 3,500 meters, more than 5,200 people were evacuated.

      Panic as Indonesian volcano erupts

      From: AAP

      December 27, 2011 3:56PM

      .

ONE of Indonesia's most active volcanoes erupted today, spewing clouds of ash and panicking villagers but no evacuation has been ordered so far, a government vulcanologist said.

The first eruption of Mount Lokon was at 3.07am local time (06.07 AEDT, 19.07 Monday GMT), followed by two more bursts within minutes, Farid Bina said from a monitoring post near the volcano on Sulawesi island.

"The eruption was heard as far as five kilometres away, causing panic among villagers living close to the volcano,'' he said, adding that winds blew volcanic ash to villages up to five kilometres to the east and northeast.

"Two villages with about 10,000 people each have been affected by the ash, which stopped later in the morning,'' he said.

More than 5,200 people were evacuated to temporary shelters when the 1,580-metre volcano erupted in July, sending huge clouds of ash as high as 3,500 metres into the sky.

Indonesia's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions last year.

      Indonesia volcano eruption panics villagers

      (AFP) – 6 hours ago

JAKARTA — One of Indonesia's most active volcanoes erupted Tuesday, spewing clouds of ash and panicking villagers but no evacuation has been ordered so far, a government vulcanologist said.

The first eruption at Mount Lokon was at 3:07 am (1907 GMT Monday), followed by two more bursts within minutes, Farid Bina told AFP from a monitoring post near the volcano on Sulawesi island.

"The eruption was heard as far as five kilometres (three miles) away, causing panic among villagers living close to the volcano," he said, adding that winds blew volcanic ash to villages up to five kilometres to the east and northeast.

"Two villages with about 10,000 people each have been affected by the ash, which stopped later in the morning," he added.

More than 5,200 people were evacuated to temporary shelters when the 1,580-metre volcano erupted in July, sending huge clouds of ash as high as 3,500 metres (11,500 feet) into the sky.

Lokon's last deadly eruption was in 1991, killing a Swiss tourist.

The Indonesian archipelago has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the "Ring of Fire" between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

The country's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions last year.

Mount Lokon in Indonesia's N Sumatra erupts
      English.news.cn 2011-12-27 08:44:31

      .

JAKARTA, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Mount Lokon in Tomohon city of Indonesia's North Sulawesi erupted at 03:07 a.m. local time on Tuesday (2207 GMT on Monday).

The eruption and its tremor were heard and felt in the post of Mount Lokon about 5 kilometers from the top.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, head of Center of Data Information and Public Relation at the National Agency for Disaster Management (BNPB), said in a statement that smoke from the eruption was not monitored as the volcano was covered by haze.

Nugroho said that the Regional Agency for Disaster Management ( BDPB) of North Sulawesi keeps coordinating with the Center for Volcanology and Geologic Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) and government apparatus to anticipate things related to increasing activities of the volcano.

Up till now, he said, Mount Lokon's danger status still at level III.

"No need to take refuge. But, people are urged to stay alert," said Nugroho.
