    • Thank you. Your efforts here are profoundly important to the dialog. I believe there is an exponential effect going far beyond what we can see or hear.

    • Thank you, Jan. Earlier today I thought of Richard Goodwin's words in John Kennedy's inaugural address: "Let the word go forth that the torch has been passed to a new generation...."

The torch of civil responsibility, truth, and justice must not be allowed to go out. You eloquently speak why the torch is important and why Paine's words are so very relevant.

    • I have gone twice to occupy space in San Diego, we started last Friday. I want to go tomorow but we have been torn down by the police. Occupy was moved to another location way out of site and the web site is down. I am waiting to figure out if we are going back to the civic center or stay in park. I hope to rejoin and protest for justice.

    • While I appreciate your passion and candor in this matter I have to disagree with your take on the evilness behind the banks on granting mortgages to people who could not pay them. No one put a gun to anyone's head to sign a mortgage, any one with a grain of sense knows what he/she can afford. Greed and living beyond one's means makes for bad financial choices.

It isn't as black and white as that. Especially when something you thought was out of your reach was made a possibility. The entire enticement and what was done afterwards was evil and they got rewarded for it at the expense of millions and those not even part of that. It was greed and the abandonment of their fiduciary responsibility that brought us here as well. There is no way to morally accept that.

I agree that certain idiots are or have been living beyond their means (mainly the government)..... I mean if I had money, I could make a killing (hopefully it wouldn't come to that) off loans...

But we have allot of other factors, and to try to discredit her whole statement on that was some real bullshit... We've had a permanent "underclass" that continues growing, wage/debt slavery have been around for a long time....

And how rude... She didn't even get partisan, was an excellent comment.....

People have to take responsibility for actions that are within their control. It's true American capitalism has become predatory but again people have to learn you cannot have everything you want. There are consequences for people who decide to live beyond their means. Black Friday is coming soon... watch the gluttony and greed as people climb over each other and rack up sky-high credit card bills to get what they want. Is this the fault of banks and government too?

Yeah and crack kills.... NO... That it sounded rude, she put herself out there shared her views of the world in a very open way, and it was all to easy to think you tried to discredit her video on that one thing....

I just like Jan, she's been around here a good while, and she wasn't trying to mislead anyone....

You're both right, it's the way you "seemed" to brush it all aside, because she didn't elaborate enough...

Your argument is based on a blatant fallacy: "...any one with a grain of sense knows what he/she can afford". People buy cars with no idea what the car will actually cost...car salesmen depend on that. The real estate business operates in large part on the same premise. Agents want to know how much you are "qualified" to buy; they sell to that number, and that number is usually higher than people can really afford. Buyers have responsibility, but Americans who are addicted to "stuff" are more concerned about what the monthly payment is and can I afford it right now.

Yeeeeah.."People buy cars with no idea what the car will actually cost" If that's the case no wonder Americans are in such a financial mess. Take some responsibility! The only fallacy here is your refusal to accept that some people are just greedy.

bankes lie .their are people that trust the bankers mybe a little uneducated.but the bottom line is if the bankers were straight up we wouldnt have to bail them out and they wouldnt have ruined the housing market.it comes from lack of regulation.you can blame the people
but the bankers took advantage of them and we are paying for it.if you look for the real problem its our goverment they take money from everyone handing it out corruption kills

You do make a valid point about some people on the whole. I personally have nothing to do with Black Friday because yes I do know there are those who are all about the stuff...But I believe that is a symptom of a pervasive underlying problem (and I do believe that too is deliberate in many ways regarding the type of monetary system that has been shaped by pushing plastic over cash in order to also make profit without assessing the consequences) and the kind of atmosphere that has been made in this country by a variety of forces. Remember after 9.11 happened, what did the government tell us to do? Go shopping. I'm just saying that when you are poor and the dream of homeownership is something you believe was elusive and then it seems possible, human nature kicks in. Are we at fault for that? For daring to think our dreams are coming true and that we can do it? I think that is really up to the observer and I don't think it in any way absolves those who are predators who take advantage of those dreams hoping they fail so they can profit from them which results in the destruction of our financial system.

Well of course not...I'm not a bank worshiper in fact I abhor them. Especially scum like Bank of America, charging user fees for debit card transactions. Big corporations and banks control our politicians like puppets as they bank roll their elections. Having said that people in general need to realize they can only live within their means. Where I live we have all had to move within our country for work at one time or another and have faced crushing unemployment for decades. Ironically we now enjoy a robust economy. There's no doubt in North America we should aspire to own our own homes and enjoy prosperity but it's all dependent on simple financing, you have to be able to cover your debt each month without relying on credit cards. Many people are living the high life and a virtual "Sword of Damocles" is hanging over their heads each month as they go further and further into debt. The American Dream is a privilege not a right. Btw your passion for the environment and the well being of our planet is inspiring ;)

    • It’s nice to see a heartfelt personal message that says it all. Thank you for this video. We need to put everything back into perspective. People from all walks of life are joining in on these protests. Today I saw a frustrated Wall Street “suit” in Zuccotti Park trying to argue with an occupation youngster who wouldn’t “take the bait”. The suit was trying to goad the kid into a fight, going on about the meritorious rising to the top, and all of that nonsense, and that the kid should stop being so lazy and get to work. They just don’t get it yet. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

      SIBob,
Thank you for all these updates about OWS and thank you for being there. That "suit" should consider himself lucky that the kid he was talking to didn't put a hole where his throat used to be with his fist. I don't know if I could've been that restrained.

I walked over to the "suit" and told him he was full of shit. He than proceeded to call me a big mouth. I left it at that and walked away. I couldn't stand by and be passive, which, I guess is the intent of the whole thing. I will give all these kids some credit for having that much restraint. I know I couldn't do it, this is the old MLK vs. Malcolm X thing. I would have gone more along with Malcolm X as I don't have it in me to take violence or aggressiveness without defending myself. Even though, at my age, this would not be advisable. I just watched the film on Keith Olbermann about the police on their scooters herding protesters and the police beating the kids. This thing is accelerating and I wonder how it will all turn out.

I'm glad you walked over to that "suit" and said that. You can't just let them blather unresponded to. We are sick if hearing their BS. I just watched Keith myself and these cops are out of control. I believe that this is a symptom of the rise of the Homeland Security Dept. Ever since all PD's came under the umbrella of Homeland Security, they have become more militaristic, violent and intimidating. I don't think it's any coincidence.

I know, they don't get it. So many want desperately to just make this a "liberal" "hippie" protest that will go away and means nothing in order to protect their own station in life.

The support from the local New York community is spreading to all sections of the population, and all ages. But, the core of this movement, and the energy and ambitiousness of it, mostly comes from the youth, who are showing all of the rest of us how to get it done.

Police Commissioner Kelly is a very dangerous man, and it would be a disaster if he ever got into the position of mayor, which he has aspirations for. I wasn't aware of the morning's events when I was up in Manhattan, but I saw squadrons of scooter cops headed downtown when I was waiting for the bus home. I guess this is their new tactic. In bygone days they used to use the mounted cops to push people around.

    • I hope the artists in the group can develop pdfs of OWS that people can print out the signs to put into their windows and cars to show their support! I hope we don't have to have a one day nation wide strike in response to the unfair behavior of Wall St. and the Banks!

It even goes beyond them as well though it most certainly includes them. It also goes to changing our entire perception of what is important in the longterm and where the true worth in life resides.

Yes, there are many most important issues. I see one of the first to get people to join the movement and for the nation and the world to be able to see that. Two ways, the 'occupy!' posters in a s many windows and cars as the nation can manage. Second, get people to stay home for a day in solidarity! If the 1% don't think they need US, let them try running the country for a day! Then there will be time as the pols realize their very jobs are on the line! ;-)
