"Peace Activists" vs Paintballs

Monday’s raid by a special operations unit of the Israeli Defense Forced against a flotilla of ships attempting to run the blockade of GAZA (run by the internationally recognized terrorist organization HAMAS) initially began with the use of paintball guns.

The paintball guns are deployed as non-lethal crowd dispersal weapons by the IDF and many other military and police organizations around the world.

While the world is currently roundly criticizing Israeli actions during the raid, careful fact checking and a final review will no doubt reveal that the IDF acted entirely in accordance with international law (the blockade is legal and is being used to prevent Iran from shipping weapons and supplies to HAMAS, which routinely rockets Israeli civilian populations. Iranian ships have already been captured attempting to deliver weapons to the Gaza strip; the Israelis offered to allow the supply flotilla to dock at an Israeli port and to ship the supplies overland to Gaza. The offer was refused. The so-called activists on board were armed and obviously prepared and trained to repel boarders; the IDF went in with clear rules of engagement to not use lethal force, risking the lives of their own soldiers in an attempt to stop the ships in the least violent manner.)

    • We need only remember the Karine A affair when in 2002 Israeli commandos seized another ship headed to Gaza -- with 50 tons of weapons including explosives, anti-tank missiles and Katyusha rockets -- to understand why Israel wants to inspect aid going to Gaza.

Since Israel withdrew in 2005 from Gaza, more than 10,000 rockets and mortars have been fired into Israel. Israel had no option but to impose a naval blockade in an effort to halt the weapons flow.

Israel repeatedly offered to allow the Free Gaza flotilla to dock at Ashdod and to deliver all humanitarian supplies to Gaza by normal overland routes.

At least one flotilla participant was quoted a few days ago as applauding the possibility of martyrdom - a clear recognition that the intent of the operation was more about confrontation than compassion.

To allow that religious fanaticism to succeed is to fail both the political and the religious call for peace and justice.
