Connecticut favors gay marriage!!

Image

The Connecticut Supreme Court overturned a ban on same-sex marriage Friday in a victory for gay-rights advocates that will allow couples to marry in the New England state.

The court found that the state's law limiting marriage to heterosexual couples discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation. The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have the right to marry.

Eight same-sex couples sued in 2004, saying their constitutional rights to equal protection and due process were violated when they were denied marriage licenses.

    • FLORIDIANS!!! VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 2.

      IT'S MORE THAN GAY MARRIAGE...
IT'S THE RIGHT TO HAVE A DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP.

      Defeat Prop #2!

      The so-called “Marriage Amendment!"
If this constitutional amendment passes, it would dramatically impact unmarried straight couples including seniors who may represent a significant portion of the 360,000 cohabitating couples in Florida.

As you may know, many seniors, who have chosen not to remarry in order to avoid the possible loss of social security and pensions from a previous marriage, have chosen to enroll with domestic partnership registries. Currently the following Florida cities and counties have domestic partnership registries: Gainesville, Key West, Miami Beach, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County and Broward County.

For unmarried couples senior and not domestic partnership registries provide access to a number of rights and protections that unmarried couples would not have unless they engage in a more complicated, time consuming and potentially costly process of executing legal documents to ensure each protection. Without domestic partnership registries, partners who have not gone through a more complex process of executing additional legal documents are in the eyes of the law strangers to each other. The impact on seniors is particularly significant given crucial healthcare and other decisions faced in the later years of life.

Passing Issue #2 and changing the Florida Constitution would mean taking the protections provided with domestic partnerships away.

    • mental illness? Can you be any more ignorant?! Homosexuality is not an illness of any kind. 2/3 of marriages in the United States end up in divorce, I bet you homosexuals can actually last in a marriage more than heterosexuals can, if given the chance. Love is love, do you really think you are better than someone else because of your sexual preference? How about you start judging people based on their accomplishments and who they are as a person, not who they choose to love.

    • It is sad to see a state population allowing this kind of mental illness to run rampant like this. These people need mental assistance, not legal approval for such crazyness. Two men are friends, nothing else. If you love a fence post, does that make it your spouse then? I hope the citizens of this state soon realize thier mistake in allowing this to be accepted like this. Wake up citizens! Our society is under seige! I just feel for the children and other victims that will show from this mistake.

these arent two "friends", they are a couple. they love each other and want to live a normal lives like the majority of people. what is sad is to see such ignorant people willing to condemn a certain group because they are different rather than accepting them. our society is not under siege, its growing towards a better place

    • I'm happy that another state decided to stop discriminating against law abiding citizens. Of course this couldn't have come at a worse time. Three and a half weeks before elections, and the gay agenda will be right back on top with Obama's terrorist agenda.

    • It's not about following the leader. It's about civil rights for all citizens in this SECULAR nation. Allowing gay people to have civil unions does NOT mean that Christian churches will suddenly have to marry them.
I don't know why so many people get legal issues and religious issues mixed up. It's so damned simplistic it makes me want to vomit.

The only reason gay marriage is being treated as anything but the non-issue it is, is the fact that politicians can use it go get votes/ charge their base. They are using ignorance to gain power.
I am personally sick and tired of it getting played over critical issues, like the war, the environment, the economy, etc...you know, things that involve EVERYBODY.

And what exactly is the opposition doing, but following the leader/ being sheep? They have no reason whatsoever to stick their nose into others' business, apart from the fact that someone's interpretation of some book told them to do it.
      Please.
Ya'll are the ones being sheep. Politicians use your prejudices to squeeze votes from you. This is a non-issue.

    • J_Jammer:

as they use your votes with the idea of being "kind" to gay people.

The only reason one wants to marry is because of the benefits....I have never heard of it being because of anything else.

I know love is involved but if that was all there was to it then living with one another would work out just fine.

Considering common law marriage is valid in most states would it not be considered a common law marriage if one stuck it out with someone for an extended period of time?

My question is would they want to get married if there were no tax benefits at all? And only benefit of being related through marriage.....

I'm going to go with no. I also think that would eliminate a whole lot of other people from marrying as well.

and I stated follow the leader because that is what it is. It has nothing to do with doing what is right and everything do with follow ho has already done it.

Same thing happened during the civil rights...it was about being right because they were always right.

"as they use your votes with the idea of being "kind" to gay people."

The fact that it is used at all is what I'm getting at. It's a non-issue.

"My question is would they want to get married if there were no tax benefits at all? And only benefit of being related through marriage.....

Ah, so suddenly you're the spokesperson for all gay people everywhere? The only people who would ever get married for love, as few as you say they might be, are straight people?
Do you wonder why people think you are prejudiced?

      That's not the point, anyway.
Getting married "for the sake of" getting married is what happens in a church.
Gay Americans can get married via all manner of religions right now - and they do.
What we are discussing are the legal rights/ benefits that straight couples get, and gay couples don't.
      It is a legal issue.

    • What? I say that is bs. People are starving and honey bees are collapsing, trees are being murdered by the thousands, polar bears are drowning, there are children living in Americans trash, fish are being over fished, jelly fish are taking over the oceans, animals are going extinct, the economy is slipping into depression, wars are going on and
all these people are worried about is being able to sign a document saying that they can legally be homosexual? WHO CARES!! If you want to do it then do it. Whatever. Now the government gets to make even more money off you guys. What an accomplishment.. If they can legally do this then I definitely should be able to smoke marijuana anytime I want. This is getting ridiculous. Americas priority seems to be backwards.

yeah there are lots of problems out there that need to be fixed, I agree. The government will now be making less off of gay married couples I assume, because of the tax benefits. marijuana should never have been illegal nor should gay marriage between consenting adults.

i think it is ironic how something fundamental to human rights like this gets a cynical response from you; the one who wants everything fixed.

    • Good news. Governments, state or federal, shouldn't be taking the role of priests or religious scholars.
Marriage is not the property of Christianity. Marriages/ civil unions are a legal issue. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

    • you shouldnt have to write on a piece of paper that two people can or cant be married thats bull shit. i thought the government wasnt supposed to delegate how you live your daily life. why some people oppose same sex marriage boggles my mind. marriage isnt an institution it started as a way to keep the inheritance inside the family. if your so worried about marriage then focus on the real problem divorce.

    • Finally, another state that allows rights provided under our Constitution for our American citizens. What is left now it to convince the courts in other states in overturning such theological laws which strip their rights as fellow Americans.

Congrats to Connecticut as well! :)
