Are Gays The Last Minority?

After facing years of racism and oppression dating back to the colonial era in the United States, the black man got his victory when Barack Obama was elected president. It would be nice if this achievement meant harmonious equality for all groups and minorities across the country, but now it seems as though homosexuals are feeling the same oppressive hand of discrimination in the U.S. with the overturning of Proposition 8.

Although the constitutional amendment was passed in June allowing same-sex couples to marry in California, Proposition 8 was established this past Tuesday (with 52% support from voters), ripping this right away from all gay couples.

    • No, gays are not the last one. Transgendered are.

      Obama has stated that to get civil rights protections for gays and lesbians he is willing to exclude transgendered people if he has to.

    • I cannot think of another one. Racial and ethnic minorities are protected by law. There are laws protecting women.
      Gays and lesbians are the only group that I can think of that can legally be singled out for state and private persecution.
      In many states they can be freely fired from their jobs or denied housing. States can bar them from adopting. They are not covered by federal hate crimes protections as are many other groups. Gay children can be bullied in school with little recourse to pursue to stop it.
      Gays and lesbians can not openly serve in the military, and they can be discharged at the will of the military authorities. Only two states now recognize their marriages, and the federal government does not recognize their marriages at all.
      Therefore, I would say that gay Americans are the last group in this country to be denied their full civil and human rights.
