An excellent piece - the idea that these servicemen and women should go to war without the comfort of knowing their family is protected is abhorrent.
The idea that these wives and husbands [for that is what they are, whether the law acknowledges it or not] should wave their spouses off and have to rely on the media to be informed of death or injury is abhorrent.
The DoD puts the American body count at 4337 as of 21 August. At a very conservative estimate of 2.5% [usual estimates being 5-10%] that means more than 100 LGB personnel have died serving in Iraq. For a nation that puts so much effort into commemorating their fallen it is truly shameful that those men and women are systematically denied recognition.
All of the arguments against LGB people serving in the military are completely rebutted by the existence of LGB people in the military. Soldiers decorated for bravery and service unequivocally demonstrate that LGB people can and do serve honourably. Institutionalised denial of that fact is an ugly, outdated practice that should long since have been consigned to history.
