46 million Iranians made their choice in one of the most vigorous and passionate election campaigns the country has ever witnessed. Moving into twenty-first century mode, voters used social networking sites such as Facebook, and text messaging, and attracted more youth than ever into the election process. Street demonstrations were huge and heated televised debates between the candidates added to the momentum. The U.S. Persian diaspora was holding its breath, perhaps wishfully, but some veterans indicated that they expected Ahmadinejad to win.
