Haiti Struck by Deadly Earthquake: Raw Video

A major earthquake rocked Haiti, killing possibly thousands of people as it toppled the presidential palace and hillside shanties alike and left the Caribbean nation appealing for international help.

A five-story U.N. building was also brought down by Tuesday's 7.0 magnitude quake, the most powerful to hit Haiti in more than 200 years according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

In the capital, Port-au-Prince, there were scenes of chaos on the streets with people sobbing and appearing dazed amid the rubble.

The quake's epicenter was only 10 miles (16 km) from Port-au-Prince. About 4 million people live in the city and surrounding area. Aftershocks as powerful as 5.9 rattled the city throughout the night and into Wednesday.

Reports on casualties and damage were slow to emerge due to communication problems.

    • Not easy to watch. Donations are great but it feels like its not enough. Haiti was not in the best shape to begin with, the last thing they need is something like this. Hopefully this opens all of our eyes and shows us that the world is not in a great place, and the people in Haiti are not the only ones suffering. Its time we come together and address that.

Big part of the reason so many people died was the building industry was unregulated, by Western world standards. So, of course the concrete did not hold up.

That is why in the US they have concrete standards and concrete/building inspectors. When you hear about buildings and parking lots pancaking during construction, those are often cases where concrete was substandard. You have to regulate/inspect building construction. It is just the way it is done.

    • For three days now I just cannot stop thinking about the earthquake and haiti. I was actually watching CNN when at five o'clock it hit and they announced it shortly afterwards. My heart is torn and is weakening. It makes me cry when I watch it on CNN all day long, but when I call on Jesus I am once again refreshen and sustained. What are they going to do? I know that is the question so many people have. I want to go there to help and make a difference even if it's just for one day.

Due to the power outtages and damage to the communication towers we cant get word about anyone... This is the worst... I am appealing to everyone anything you can spare whether its a single dollar bill or a gallon of water would be greatly appreciated..Thank you

    • As BIll Maher said: "Haiti: You know who gets away with murder? God. No matter what shit goes down, to the least deserving, he skates on "mysterious ways"

Of all places, Haiti has to be hit by this. It just seems as if things always seem to pile up on the least fortunate. Haiti just was beginning to make some inroads into some semblance of semi-stability and this had to happen. Its almost as if fate has conspired against this country and its people...

People cling to God in these cases because they have nothing left. I do not blame them. Not that I wish them harm. But they should ask themselves why their loving God would allow "an act of God" such as this to befall them.

    • Thoughts and hope goes out to them, and hopefully aid ASAP.

Just for a moment, remove your conscience, drown your compassion, and replace your heart with a shriveled turd. Look at these pictures of suffering and what's the first thing that comes to mind to say? "It's your own fault."

You just experienced a moment of being Pat Robertson.

    • They are not kidding that it is graphic. I physically shuddered. Aside from the death toll, which the video does not shy from showing - the devastation to the buildings was massive too. I think this video conveys more than words could. It leaves no room for misinterpretation or disbelief.

Haiti devastation is the result of U.S. oppression.

"The unstable, makeshift dwellings imposed upon Haitians by Washington’s neoliberal policies have now, for many, been turned into graves. Those same policies are to blame for the lack of hospitals, ambulances, fire trucks, rescue equipment, food and medicine. The blow dealt by such a natural disaster to an economy made so fragile from decades of plundering will greatly magnify the suffering of the Haitian people."

    • There are times like this when we need to look at own selfs and cherish what we have. Cause in a blink of an eye it can all be lost. I do not believe Haiti will get any better from here on out. It is already a poverty stricken place and no source of income what so ever.

    • Watching this clip reminds that people all over the world are suffering, and me wasting any of the precious time in my God given life arguing with anybody on this website or in my personal life, is really just" me saying prayers to the Devil.

      I surrender this useless battle.

      Truce and Peace to everyone.

      I'm shaken.
