Haiti was a nation of farmers, but thanks to the strings attached to U.S. aid, government policies made profitable farming unprofitable. So the farmers were pushed to the cities to provide a cheap manufacturing labor force. All those people you see on the TV in their shattered shantytowns? We helped put them there. With exploitative loans and yes, even a classic CIA-backed coup, we helped create this mess.

Here's Naomi Klein, the author of "The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism," speaking Wednesday night at the Ethical Culture Society to warn us against it happening again.

    • im glad that Ms. Naomi Klein added that "this is not a conspiracy" when discussing the reforming of corporate policies, that will be only seek to make profits for the U.S.

      Here it is again. Glad to see that some can see through the military industrial complex. I hate to be so cynical but I have been tortured and harassed by them for 15.5 years. I'd even go so far as to say they caused the earthquake with HAARP. These bastards are evil. It's just that every time there is a war protest in Washington DC or London, something happens to take it out of the news. They are expanding their wars at a rate far greater than you can imagine.

    • WOW! Thank you so much for posting this Future America. It is exactly what I was thinking yesterday when NPR reported the George Bush (and Clinton) were going to "re-build the infrastructure" of Haiti. Bush???, bugs in the infrastructure, built in torture and spying techniques, mind control. They might even make it into the new Guantanamo Bay. Clinton and Bush are meeting with Obama today. If Haiti is smart, they will keep the military at the airport only and let lay charities take over, and then get the military out of there as fast as they can. That goes for Israel too, who seems to be very "interested" in helping.
