Grindr, the friend-finding phone application that has become a popular destination for gay men looking to meet up, experienced a surge in traffic in the Tampa area during the Republican National Convention this week.
According to figures provided by Grindr's analytics department, the application was on track to experience a more than 200 percent increase in log-ins this past week compared with numbers from the first three weeks of August.
Average number of log-ins for the first three weeks of this month was 2,207. The week before the Republican National Convention — when the expected 50,000 GOP members, media and protesters descended on the town — the average number of log-ins increased 25 percent, to 2,746.
The application averaged 1,079 users per day for the five days convention activity was booming in Tampa.
The five days of the convention that have been reported would set a weekly pace of 7,558, a 242 percent increase from the first three weeks of August.

@BJ3000, I was just wondering, is that the number of guys out have done in the last year, or the number you are wishing you did.

The obvious implication is that Republicans are a bunch of closeted gay-bashing hypocrites. And that may be true, to some degree. But it's also quite possible that Grindr usage soared because of all the gay or closeted journalists (nearly 100% of whom are Democrats) and gay or closeted left-wing protesters who were also in town for the convention.
