The White Buffalo Calf Woman Society has a month-long series of events during October 2008 to celebrate 31 years serving all women and children on the Lakota Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
Founded in 1977, it was the first domestic violence shelter in the world for women of color - although it also serves "our white sisters," according to Tillie Black Bear, one of several courageous native women who created the shelter.

    • I told you my ultimate goal is ensuring Due Process as promised to us by our constitution.

You keep saying I sound upset.... Is this my tone or the constant use of vulgar language (sarcasm).......

    • The statistics do not mirror reality, and all recent studies tell us that in relationships women are just as likely to be violent as men. Problem is when a women gets violent and a man reacts he is charged, this is why so many more women are seen as the victims. State law in Mass states that the police must arrest the person who could do more damage and/or make more money regardless of who is actually commiting the crime. Men also do not normally press charges or even tell people about being victims of DV. When they do so they are shunned.

Just as 80% of all DV cases get dismissed, this does not mean all 80% of them are false. Statistics are flawed in this way and we can only take this issue on a case by case basis.

This issue really gets you upset.

I imagine you are going thru the frustration experienced by a female whose story is not believed by the cops & others.

      What is you ultimate goal?

Changing the VAWA won't make it any easier for men to be believed.

It also won't make it easier for men to report abuse - as you said they fear being shunned and ridiculed.

And - to be honest - you seem very upset.

I wish there is a way I could send you some peace, calm and serenity.

I wish you well in your effort - because just like a female victim - your words should be taken seriously.

If there are any men out there who are victims of DV - I suggest you secretly videotape the next encounter with your perpetrator - and post it for the world to see..

I have seen lots of videos of men attacking and degrading women - but have never seen video of an actual male victim being abused.

Unfortunately I think a video is about the only way male victims will be truly believed.

Even your frustration over this issue - could be interpreted as an anger management problem - strictly because you are a guy.

      Good Luck!

    • regjoeschmo - You are correct in what you write - and the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society does care about males who are DV victims - or have other concerns.

While the overwhelming majority of DV is against women (and a vast amount of the cases are very legitimate) - it is true there are female perpetrators and male victims of DV.
And like women, but likely for different reasons - do not report the crimes.

    • Many shelters do not allow young boys over 12 in their walls and it leads to them going back to abusive homes. I personally am a victim of abuse. The police, the courts, and society shuns the idea that women abuse men. Generally men dont file charges. It took me 30 minutes to even get an incedent report when my ex assaulted me in front of two children, and the courts refused to take it into consideration.

    • They help all victims of abuse - male or female.
Also - they have an extensive out reach to young men on the Rosebud and surrounding areas - as males approx 21 (and slightly younger) are the highest mortality in the suicide attempts & crisis on the Rosebud.

Tillie Black Bear and the White Buffalo Calf Woman Society doesn't discriminate when it comes to males.

And unless the crime is violent, the believe in education rather than condemnation.

Those who commit violence acts must first pay for the crime.

They realize there are male victims - but that is much less common than the abuse of females.

      Why do you ask?
Do you know a male or young male who needs help?
