LOST // The writing on the wall, or "It's all in the eyes."

Last night, LOST returned to it's heavy mythological roots. I felt as if I'd travelled back in time to season 2, specifically the reveal of the writing on Jacob's cave wall felt like a remarkable parallel to John Locke's discovery of the blast door map back in Lockdown. Here's a screengrab in case you wish to relish in the wonder that was that episode of yore. Yes. I just said "yore".

What did you think of the episode? What did you learn? So far people have reached out with the following:

  • Why was Jacob looking for a successor???
  • Why did Jacob appear as an adult to Hurley, but appeared as a child to Faux-Locke?
  • So which Kwon was a candidate? Jin or Sun?
  • Why was Kate excluded from the list of candidates? Clearly she's important, but why?
  • Sure, Locke turns into a substitute teacher in the new timeline, but what are the title implications on the island? Who is the substitute for Jacob on the island? (cough, cough) Sun and Jin overlap comes to mind.

Well? Let's fire it up and discuss below.

Bonus topic:

Check out John Locke's eyes from scenes back in Lockdown:

Now compare them to this screenshot of Faux-Locke from last night's The Substitute:

Are these the same eyes?

Added: pjacobs51 posted an interesting collection of "Lost Eyeballs" from YouTube, check it out.

    • I think I saw my name crossed off the list scratched into the rock. Does this mean I'm no longer a candidate?

    • This is one, I can post the other two if you want.

Names recognized (not just in this screencap):

      -Littleton (Claire/Aaron)
      -Faraday (duh)
      -Lewis (Charlotte)
-Troup(e)-Guy that was killed in the turbine
      -Burke (Juliet)
-O'Toole (I have no idea who that is)
-Mattingly (dude from the 50's in the army)

    • OK here are all of the thoughts running through my mind.

      1. The numbers: Someone on ONTD (yes I read ONTD) pointed out that three of the six numbers matched the seats/rows the people were sitting in. Specifically, Jack was sitting in row 23, which was his number. I think this theory is debunked though, because Ana Lucia was sitting in row 42 and if she comes back and becomes an integral part then...I may stop watching.

      2. Helen (Locke's fiance) mentioned that they should get her parents and Locke's father together, and they could elope. Does this mean Locke is on good terms with his father? If my dad paralyzed me, I probably wouldn't invite him to my wedding. Either Locke is reeeally forgiving in this reality, or he was paralyzed another way. Or when Jacob saved him (if Jacob saved him in this reality? (Ow my head is starting to hurt)) he gave him amnesia and Locke forgot that his dad pushed him out of a window.

      3. ONTD also posted high quality screencaps of all of the names and numbers on the walls of the cave Locke and Sawyer went to (I'll try to go back and find them, but that comment section was such a clusterflock of gifs and all caps that it may be hard). Among the names crossed of were Faraday, Charlotte's last name, and Littleton, which I believe is Claire's last name? So it could either be Claire was considered to be a candidate, or Aaron.

      4. I wish Ben was my AP Euro teacher. I probably would have enjoyed it more, and passed the test.

    • Ok, no one has really dived into the use of The Stooges' "Search and Destroy" yet. I mentioned it on the liveblog last night (big props to hannahmcnoface for sourcing the song for me), but check out the lyrics and some of the correlations:

      "I'm a street walking cheetah
with a hide full of napalm
I'm a runaway son of the nuclear A-bomb
      I am a world's forgotten boy
The one who searches and destroys
      Honey gotta help me please
      Somebody gotta save my soul
      Baby detonates for me
Look out honey, 'cause I'm using technology !
Ain't got time to make no apology
Soul radiation in the dead of night
Love in the middle of a fire fight
      Honey gotta strike me blind
      Somebody gotta save my soul
      Baby penetrates my mind
And I'm the world's forgotten boy
The one who's searchin', searchin' to destroy
And honey I'm the world's forgotten boy
The one who's searchin', searchin' to destroy
      Forgotten boy, forgotten boy
      Forgotten boy said
      hey forgotten boy"

Over on the liveblog I bolded the sections of the song that actually had screen time last night. Pretty telling if you consider the following:

Jacob appearing as a boy --> "world's forgotten boy"

The use of Jughead/Jacob as a boy --> "I'm the runaway son of the nuclear A-bomb"

Redemption, being saved, soul --> "Somebody gotta save my soul."

Here's a link, and you can even listen to the song over there:

    • At first I was trying to draw an all male comparison to the numbers, implying that Kwon meant Jin. Maybe there is a numerical correlation between these men and a set of number for women.

But then someone pointed out that 'Shephard' could be Christian or Claire.

PS, how tough of a grader would Mr. Linus be?

Whoa, talk about meta. I just found this lost piece of script from next week's episode. This is getting strange:

      Ben Linus

Oh, I'm fair, Josh. You'll get exactly what you deserve.
      (beat)
That's what you want, isn't it?

    • More to pontificate:

If there is a number for each Lostie, what does each number mean? How did Jacob arrive at that conclusion for each individual person?

    • I have so many questions now...

      - Why is Jacob trying to find himself a successor ?

      - What was it that caused Sayid to fail the "test" ?

      - What is the significance of seeing dead people and how does it increase your chances of being the right candidate for the island?

      - Can coming back to the island as Locke get him in corporeal form that allows him to finally escape the island? If so , how can he change into Smokey at will still? And if he can become Smokey, does that mean Ilana's statement that "hes stuck in that body" only means he can be in human form as Locke?

I now see what jacob's nemesis was referring to when he said back a few seasons "You are wrong" , he was referring to the idea that the island needed protecting and Jacob was on a mission to bring candidates in.

It is also clear they are circulating the faith/science theme within the conflict of Jacob and his nemesis ... really fascinating

This is super interesting. So let's tackle some of your questions:

      - Why is Jacob trying to find himself a successor?

I'm wondering the same thing. If they are truly immortal, then why would it matter? Unless on some level Jacob wanted the same thing as his nemesis: To leave the island. But then, he was able to leave and meet each Lostie...maybe only for short bursts?

      - What was it that caused Sayid to fail the "test" ?

This is a huge question. What did Dogen and Lennon see in Sayid that gave away the infection? I feel like maybe there is a clue locked away in the fate of Danielle's team? Will need to revisit that whole sequence.

      - What is the significance of seeing dead people and how does it increase your chances of being the right candidate for the island?

Another great question to ponder. Obviously Walt had his run-in with dead people, so why was he not a candidate?

      - Can coming back to the island as Locke get him in corporeal form that allows him to finally escape the island? If so , how can he change into Smokey at will still? And if he can become Smokey, does that mean Ilana's statement that "hes stuck in that body" only means he can be in human form as Locke?

My money is on him being somehow tied to whatever body he chose to inhabit. So, he can become Smokey, but somehow the decision to inhabit Locke (ahem, bad pun alert) locked him in that form. Maybe the jump to a candidate is also similarly related. PERHAPS Jacob's "candidate" is not so much a successor, but a substitute host? Jacob copies himself to a new form in a similar way that his nemesis did with Locke's body? Hmm...

      This opens up another question:

      - Is the smoke monster the true form of the nemesis? Or is his true form the Man in Black?

      - What is Jacob's true form? Mini-Jacob? A ray of sunlight?
