The sight says the petition has been closed to new sigs.
Dang good petition though. That blew my mind that the prop passed. What the heck!!!!
I guess hating black people is out of style for the little minded do gooders, so now they'll hate gays for awhile. Sooner or later us white guys got to wind up on the s*&t list. I can just hear it now, "Ugh, straight white guy, you're going to hell, it says so in the bible." - 3 years ago

I was truly disgusted to find out 70% of black people who voted, voted no for prop 8. Seriously it was not that long ago blacks weren't allowed to be legally married or interracial couples weren't allowed to be married. Maybe the people who opposed prop 8 should have made those points instead of the cute little Apple computer parity commercials. In my eyes this is the same thing as the 1960's and the civil rights movement.
I was taught to love everyone, no matter race, sexual preference, religion. whatever it may be I was raised we are all the same. It really saddens me especially seeing all these people in California being brainwashed, religious persecution? Christian adoption agencies wouldn't be able to adopt out if they denied a same sex couple an adoption? Children would be taught in school marriage was between a partner and another partner? (I don't know what they teach in California, I've never been there. I can tell you this, up here in Washington I do not remember ONE single lesson in school about MARRIAGE?????? WTF??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? You would be labeled intolerant if you voted for Prop 8? UMMMMM NO YOU'RE A BIGOT NOW THAT YOU VOTED FOR IT YOU IDIOTS! Oh I love this one the MOST; Churches would be forced to perform gay marriages? Most gay marriages are civil and I highly doubt they are going to throw a big fit because the catholic priest won't marry them!
I honestly don't which is worse, the propaganda the prop 8 commercials were or the idiots who believed the propaganda and voted for prop 8. It's almost comparable to the Holocaust and the Nazi propaganda. Hope you're proud of yourself and your bigot asses! Just remember this is how your grandmothers and grandfathers felt during the civil rights movement when they had to drink from a "colored" faucet. Hey here's some more propaganda for you to believe, why not make a gay faucet, they might give you coodies! - 3 years ago

The constitution is an inspired document, and it is rather quiet on the nature of unions, so voters have the floor. Little tolerance can be assumed on part of the founding fathers for something other than 'natural' marriage -- what did they know would come about? Give them credit for leaving certain things to amendments and states' rights.
So here we are: opponents are displeased with the outcome on Prop 8, but rather than have the majority rule, we seem encouraged by voices here to open rebellion. Forget the law voiced by the people -- anarchy is being espoused in a childish rant.
Why seek your comfort in reactionary moves of intimidation and worse against the Mormons, Catholics, Evangelicals, blacks & latinos, married straights with children, who have all declared California safe as regarding the sacred institution? Is this different from radicalism of other sorts?
The law is now declared -- find peace with it. Be civil in response, because this has resulted a much clearer mandate than a 4-to-3 decision.

More "law of the jungle" argument.
Try reading any of the arguments in this thread, or others, that make an excellent case against the tyranny of the majority, and then explain how the majority has any right to take away rights from the minority.
People with your stance rarely, if ever, address that.
You just say that your opinion is "right" because people with your opinion outnumber the people who disagree.
What gives you the right to stuff your nose into the lives of others, and dictate how they get to live?

I think it's important to highlight that the California constitution, the guiding document of and by Californians, was changed in a very significant way by influences from OUTSIDE the state. For any "will of the people" argument to hold, that argument must have as its basis an unbiased will, not one that was bought and paid for by coffers filled with hard-earned tithes.

true57 -- I believe you're mistaken. No tithing money was used to aid the pro-Prop 8 team. Well, actually, there _was_ a contribution to ProtectMarriage.com of $2078.95 by the LDS church to cover travel expenses. Other than that, this was a California concern voted for by citizens, and funded with personal contributions.
dumkrum -- Good observation: 'You just say that your opinion is "right" because people with your opinion outnumber the people who disagree.' But of course, laws can be passed that are wrong. This is the democratic way; a law was declared by the voice of the people. It can usually be relied upon to enact the most viable rules. Safety in numbers.
Should the 5000-year-old definition of marriage be altered without the consent all Californians? The former legality of homosexuals marrying was granted by fiat. That, my friend is the only crime here (look it up). Moving to CT?

"dumkrum" - Yay childish wordplay. Doesn't exactly inspire me to attempt to have a decent debate with you.
Anyway
That's not the way our government works. We are not a pure democracy, particularly when it comes to individual rights. Everyone is equal, end of story.
The court system is there to protect rights of the minority, as has been stated many, many times.
Denying gay people the right to marry is, at its core, saying that gay relationships are inferior to straight relationships. You can have all the opinions you want, but, again, we are all equal under the secular law of the United States.Your marriage-as-a-purely-man-woman-monogamous-institution argument isn't based on fact.
Globally speaking, there have been and still are plenty of cultures that allow/ed same sex marriage.
Polygamy is actually much older than monogamous marriage - in your terms, that's about as traditional as it gets, and it should be upheld as the only law of the land.Even if monogamous, man/woman marriage were the "way it always was" - so what? Societies evolve. Gay marriage isn't going to destroy America, and it's ridiculous to suggest so.

"No man has a natural right to commit aggression on the equal rights of another, and this is all from which the laws ought to restrain him."
~Thomas Jefferson"Of liberty I would say that, in the whole plenitude of its extent, it is unobstructed action according to our will. But rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law,' because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual."
~Thomas Jefferson“That the desires of the majority of the people are often for injustice and inhumanity against the minority, is demonstrated by every page of the history of the whole world”
~John AdamsAnyone who thinks the majority/ powerful are always right is a bleeding idiot. American democracy is not mob rule, particularly when it comes to the rights of an individual.
If we lived by the law of the jungle, every lynch mob in history is off the hook for murdering innocent black people. After all, they outnumbered the black people. Please read and comprehend the Constitution before you claim to know anything about what it means to be American.

Mention the Tyranny of the Majority, and it is ignored.
Mention the separation of church and state, and it is ignored.
Mention the fact that the founding fathers were hardcore against the former, and hardcore for the latter - or the f---cking constitution for f---ck's sake - and it DEFINITELY gets ignored.
Hell, they even ignore the teachings of their supposed god.
Jesus wouldn't be campaigning to take rights from people - he'd be out there showing drug dealers the error of their ways, or shooting the shit with hobos.Ignore = root word of ignorance.
So screw it. Lets get to the meat of the issue.
Whatever bogus reasons anyone can barf up against gay marriage, it always boils down to "what you stick your dick into" - it's never about deep bonds or commitment between two adults, much less love.
If someone has boiled marriage down to "what you stick your dick into," then they have more problems than I care to address.
People with that sort of viewpoint definitely aren't in any position to be forcing their simplistic and unhealthy view of marriage on anyone else in the legal arena. - 3 years ago

I am completely disgusted by all who voted against gay marriage, and have 0 respect for them as human beings.
To completely disregard the rights of your fellow humans and to blatantly violate the Constitution which guarantees the pursuit of happiness and equal treatment under the law, to mandate and control the personal lives of others, is not only un-American, it is fascist in its insanity.
I think it's cute how Soleil10 is trying to say that gay activists are Nazis--considering how Hitler and Nazis hated gays and killed thousands of them. But I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, considering Soleil10 found the need to laugh at these deaths.
Majority? Fuck the majority. The majority has NO RIGHT to take rights away from the minority. PERIOD.

Don't you think people should have equal rights America? Aren't those the values- love, unity, freedom, equality- that you want to teach the children you keep referring to?

this whole proposition 8 thing just irks me... I hate that people are even dictating through law whether or not homosexuals like myself can get married (or even use the word "marriage") I'm 100% sure marriage falls under the unalienable right of the pursuit of happiness.
I don't even have any say in the matter since I'm only 16 and not a Californian resident...

How 'bout we just remove marriage from law completely? You know, it's possible to take kids out of a class that might teach that, and also...
Schools are already full of propaganda. My middle school (It might've been high school) health book had a sex-ed section. Thing is, it had no mention of condoms or birth control, only that "abstinence until marriage" crap. Also there's the whole creationism arguement.
So, what if some parents don't want their kids learning about conservative propaganda?

Many countries have separate civil and religious marriages. They still do not approve of gay marriages for the greater good of the nation. From this angle it is not an issue of separation of church and state.
Blacks do not see this issue as a civil right and are offended by such claim. They feel used by gays activists

Delia, I have experienced that arguement first-hand. A woman on YouTube named AmericanMOM gave me an arguement that if same-sex marriage is legalized, the world will go into a population recession...birth rates would go down. There's even a documentary, "Demographic Winter," basically traditional family values propaganda.
What she failed to explain is the decline in birth rates in Russia, where same-sex marriage is apparently illegal. Also, she thought Sweden had legalized same-sex marriage - it's Norway.

The constitution of California has been changed
Clifornians rose and spoke against gay marriage despite the secretary of state having tempered the words on the ballot which reduced the results
They spoke for the constitutional rights of parents, the constitutional rights of children, the constitutional rights of freedom of religion. They defended the greater good despite insults, attacks and more
Billions of $ have been spent over the years to brainwash Americans and prepare them to accept gay marriages. David stroke Golliath.

You need to respect the rights of parents who do not want their 5 year old children to be victims of political propaganda in school and the rights and need of children to have a mother and a father.
The greater good is the most important rights to protect.
Your definition of marriage is not what I believe marriage is.
If Jerry Brown did not tempered with the words on the ballot initiative, the % of yes would have been much higher.
Prop 8 won with a higher % than Obama won the presidency nation wide. Should we have a tantrum and refuse the dictate of 51% of the population ?

The 'greater good' is treating EVERYONE in this country as an equal citizen worthy of the same rights, wouldn't you agree?
Also, as far as mother and father are concerned, the divorce rate in this country is around 63%. A lot of children are being raised by single parents.

The divorce rate is no 63 %
