Researchers have found that by restricting your calorie intake, you are three times less likely to develop age-related mental disorders. This was discovered after a study in which primates who ate low-calorie diets, had a healthier mental state than those whos calorie intake was not low.
Ricki Colman and his colleagues began their study at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center in 1989, where adult Rhesus monkeys were seperated into to groups -- a caloric restriction group and a control group. The caloric restriction group had their food intake reduced by ten percent over three months, up until the 30 percent restriction level that was selected by the researchers.
Findings showed that 37 percent of the control group had died of age-related causes, compared to the 13 percent that had died from the caloric restriction group. The control group of Rhesus monkeys had experience diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and brain atrophy, at a rate three times that of the restricted monkeys.
These results are to be linked to humans.
