Google Phone designers Mike and Maaike are in the preliminary process of coming up with the ATNMBL (autonomobile). To be released by 2040, the all-wheel-drive car doesn't have a steering wheel, brake pedal or drivers seat and drives entirely by itself. The size of a parking space, the electric powered car will have an internet sitting room and can fit about seven people. Upon entering the ATNMBL, passengers are asked where they want to go and the car finds the quickest way to the destination.

    • Ok,but what if some asshole in a vintage manually controlled car catches a little bit of road rage and decides to run you off of the street? Is this car going to do some evasive/defensive driving on your behalf? Doubt it. Personally I prefer my life in my own hands...or at least in the hands of someone I trust. But then again,I suppose i'm just old fashioned >=)

    • If anybody can f**king afford it.

We were supposed to have flying cars by now too.

      It's f**king 2010 almost. Where's my space needle eco-dwelling?

Where's my moon colony vacation house?

      Where's my cure for cancer?

Turns out society decided those things weren't important, or were too expensive.

46 million American are left to die because we don't think they should be covered by government health insurance, and the private companies won't cover them for a price that the poor bastards can afford.

9 times the number of people that died on 9-11 die every year in the USA because they can't get access to medical treatment due to financial issues.

IT'S ALMOST 2010 NOW, AND THIS SHIT HASN'T CHANGED.

Oh yeah... and wasn't the Segway supposed to be all the rage?

Things haven't changed much since 1920, except we have cell phones and twitter and the internet-- but they only are taking the place of speakeasies, soapboxes and real live communities with neighbors whose names we know.

Hell, we still think Nuclear War is a good idea.

Even if we do get driverless cars, we'll still be a bunch of barbaric chimpanzees.

    • my computer/electrical engineering senior design group designed a completely autonomous vehicle this year, and it is much MUCH harder than it sounds. especially if you want to take into account other drivers, traffic lights, pedestrians, right of way instances, lane departure, etc...

cant wait till the technology is commercialized though! i think COMPLETELY autonomous vehicles will be on the streets closer to 2020-2030...hopefully

    • We should just increase rail infrastructure and have driverless trains. I find the thought of deadly robot transportation devices much less alarming when they're confined to tracks.

    • I saw a special on driveless cars on the Science Channel. Scientists said that by the time they create a driveless car, they would move so fast that windows would be turned into LCD screens. They didn't want people to be alarmed at how fast they moving, and how close they were moving along other high speed cars.
