Breathing in the aroma of citrus fruit reduces stress and relaxes the body, say scientists.

Tests on a compound found in the smell of fruits like lemon showed it reversed the effects of stress on 109 different genes in the human body.

The findings - published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry - indicate the scent of lemons (as well as lavender, mango and other fragrant plants) could make a real difference when it comes to stress.

Guess aromatherapy really does work! Let's all use this as an excuse to kick back with an ice-cold gin and tonic this weekend - with a slice of lemon, of course.

    • Northern Italians knew the lemon was a wonderful thing. My grandmather had a jug of fresh lemon water in her frig. Plus she used fresh lemon in a lot of dishes and even in her salad dressing, potato salad with Olive oil, fresh lemon juice and capers; the lovely little buds. AAhhh it takes me back.
