Law enforcement agencies have attempted to get guns off the street by allowing people to turn them in for gift cards.
Back in March, an LAPD gun-buyback program that traded gift cards for firearms netted nearly 1,700 weapons, including 40 assault-style weapons and a rifle with a grenade launcher.
The grenade launcher AR-15 rifle, which did not have a grenade in it, was delivered to the Los Angeles Police Department's Topanga station over the weekend as officers across the city distributed gift cards in exchange for handguns, rifles and shotguns. The anonymous drop-off program netted AR-15s, Uzis and AK-47s.
Sheriff Lee Baca will be on hand in Rancho Cucamonga to watch the guns being crushed. They will be recycled into steel rebar.

LA Times follow up article:
"Dirth of guns results in an increase in rebar murders"Officials today said that rebar formed from the more than 16,000 guns confiscated from criminals and collected from numerous gun buy-back programs across L.A. County has been stolen and used in numerous murders across L.A. County.
Law enforcement agencies have attempted to get rebar off the street by allowing people to turn them in for gift cards. The rebar will be melted down and converted into chains.
Rebar proponents have protested, saying "Rebar doesn't kill people; people kill people."
Sheriff Lee Baca will be on hand in Rancho Cucamonga to watch the rebar being crushed. Baca went on the record lamenting: "I thought we had solved this problem when we converted the guns into rebar. But we are convinced that no one will hurt anyone else with chains."

"The grenade launcher AR-15 rifle, which did not have a grenade in it, was delivered to the Los Angeles Police Department's Topanga station over the weekend as officers across the city distributed gift cards in exchange for handguns, rifles and shotguns."
This is laughable. Of COURSE the AR-15 didn't have a hand grenade in it, stupid. The idiot author may have just as well said: "the 16,000 guns, which are made to shoot bullets, did not have any bullets in them."
Or, equally obvious: "the author, who was born with a brain, didn't bother using his."
You can buy a number of guns, including the Yugo SKS, which are made to launch grenades. You can't get grenades for them, though.
That doesn't make them any more dangerous. Like we say: "A gun without bullets is just a club"
Oooh, I wonder how many of those also had bayonet lugs? Does that make them more dangerous?
A rifle with a bayonet = a spear. Are we freaked out about spears now, too?

I wonder how many of these guns were stolen just for the $200 card?
In other words, could it be that the government just subsidized crime? YEP.
They should have resold the guns to law-abiding citizens who need to arm themselves for their own personal protection. They could have ended up MAKING money instead of spending it. Then they could have provided the citizens who bought the guns with training, a lock box, and they would have had about 16,000 armed, trained law-abiding citizens who are capable of defending themselves.
No...that would make too much sense.

Well I'm glad they got some Uzi's and Kalashnikovs off the street but why is it that people are so fearing of guns when guns are how we've kept the peace in America since the beginning. Guns have always been a defensive tool in my eyes and that's why people own them. I would hate to live in L.A. without a gun or two.

Lived in LA. my entire life much of it in East LA., I've never owned a gun and never needed one, however I have seen many of the young men running around with guns involved in issues involving guns. Needless arrest records, gunshot wounds. I'm not trying to make a blanket statement, just my observation.

It is well known that buy back programs are a waste of taxpayer money. Any serious criminal won't give up their gun willingly, especially for a measly gift card. That same gun can be used to shake down a rival drug dealer for a few thousand dollars! Re: the guns turned in by the law abiding citizens are usually in poor condition- junk guns, basically. Refurbishment and resale of guns to licensed dealers sounds good, of course- but I wouldn't want a gun that was used to kill someone for a pair of Nikes. The thugs are probably happy, now it's a whole lot easier to break in and rob Granny since she turned her late husband's pistol over to the cops to get destroyed.

Well, as long as they are not forcing anyone to give up their legal firearms I don't mind. But they could sell them to legal dealers and make some money to help out their deficit. Kind of a half baked plan if you ask me.

God help us! Now we are much more vulnerable to an invasion from Yemen or unable to prevent the FEMA army from putting all of us in California in concentration camps! Don't the police know that the more guns people there are running around with on the streets of L.A. the less likely that the secret armies that the govt has been hiding in secure undisclosed locations will attack us and take away all of our freedoms? 16000 guns taken from the patriotic, sharpshooting , highly trained private citizens...we are DOOMED!
Or could it mean that there are that many fewer guns to be stolen in burglaries from the law abiding citizens homes while they are at work and used against cops and innocent people in the commission of crimes? Just where do you think the street thugs get the guns they use? Go down fill out the paperwork at the local sporting goods stores...hell no, they steal them...from the homes of the people who DO fill out all the paperwork etc. Get some street smarts. - 2 years ago

They would have made money just selling the guns confiscated by the police. Don't they have a budget crisis in Cal? But they are giving out $200 to get guns so they can melt them down, sounds like they have enough money, just pissing it away on dumb pet projects.

hahaha - criminals weren't lining up to turn their guns in - law abiding citizens were. This is stupid! If you make your living by robbing people - you don't turn in your gun for a $200 gift card - wake the fuck up!!! Hahaha. "We did it" comment is especially funny - "Oh no you didn't"!!! Hahaha.
I am a law abiding citizen and have a number of registered legal weapons - and hell no - I am not giving anything up - for no stupid gift cards. I am keeping mine oiled and ready - and keeping my skills sharp and honed - for if a time comes (god forbid) to stand up and protect my family or my country - I will not hesitate!!! - 2 years ago

Actually, the results of the british gun control laws are worse than you think.
http://law.bepress.com/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=7212&context=expresso
According to multiple studies done, synthesized in this well-documented analysis, gun crimes in England actually INCREASED after prohibitiion and confiscation.
What's more, in nations like Russia, where guns were confiscated and destroyed (a halmark of totalitarian regimes--note to Obama), while homocides using guns dropped, they saw a statistically equal increase in homocides using other weapons of choice.
Same thing with suicides: take away the guns, and you see more hangings, drug overdoses, etc.

Yeah, I posted the story about this a few month ago when they were doing a gun drive. Looks like I was beat to the punch at the cheapskate comment, but here's my take:
With the california deficit, why wouldn't they sell the guns back to manufacturers so that the parts could be restamped with new serial numbers and rebored? Better yet, why not document all of the guns and then just give them to the police force so that they don't have to go out and buy new ones?
A penny saved is a penny earned. Or is it a penny melted down into a paperweight and then replaced by a penny made of raw materials is earned? Perfect cents.

16,000 guns... for $100-200 a pop, that means they spent (for argument's sake) around $250,000 in gift cards. Add in some administrative costs... and number comes out at around $350,000, all said and done.
Makes sense, and sounds good. They took 16,000 guns off of the streets, and out of the hands of would-be criminals for a measly $350K. Even if only 1% of these would've been used in a violent crime, that's still 160 violent crimes that have been prevented.
Where the logic falters is how they processed them. Destroyed for rebar!? What!?
I suppose it would've made too much sense to have sold them to a private dealer to be refurbished and resold to law-abiding citizens. Why on earth would we want to make that money back and repeat the process? You mean we could get another 16,000 guns off the street just by reselling this last batch? Inconceivable!
That makes way too much sense and it's so much easier to keep getting those spineless taxpayers to send more money.
So, send more money, taxpayers. We know that you have no idea what we're doing with it, and we thank you for that... from the bottom of our hearts... really. You make our job so much easier by not thinking critically about anything we do.
Thank you.
