Terrified Yang Yun thought she was going to die when her legs were paralysed by crippling cramps in arctic temperatures.
She had been taking part in a free diving contest WITHOUT any breathing equipment.
Competitors had to sink to the bottom of an aquarium's 20ft arctic pool and stay there for as long as possible amid the beluga whales at Polar Land in Harbin, north east China.
But when Yun, 26, tried to head to the surface she struggled to move her legs.
Lucky Yun said: "I began to choke and sank even lower and I thought that was it for me - I was dead. Until I felt this incredible force under me driving me to the surface."
Beluga whale Mila had spotted her difficulties and using her sensitive dolphin-like nose guided Yun safely to the surface.
An organiser said: "Mila noticed the problem before we did.
"We suddenly saw the girl being pushed to the top of the pool with her leg in Mila's mouth.
"She's a sensitive animal who works closely with humans and I think this girl owes her, her life."

Stuff that's on Current Tonight doesn't get a sticker because then the whole site would be full of them. That's just my guess, though.

Thanks for the heads up on that lvp. I don't think Upstream or Webmash come on my Current channel in Texas because I cannot find the shows. I would love to watch them.
I think you must be right about that Nettle. A few of my other posts have been on Upstream and/or Webmash, I was informed about it via email, but those posts don't have On TV stickers either.
Thanks to both of you. - 2 years ago

OK I figured it out. It only aired on TV in the UK so that's why the Picked for TV sticker is present on the UK side of Current.com.

This story about Mila is a biggie. She demonstrates, for anyone with a brain, that the way we look at animals needs to be adjusted. It also needs to be studied.
Is Mila an exception within her breed? Is her breed an exception among whales? Consider: How much could we learn about the ocean depths if we had whales as partners? All that's lacking is communication.
I would consider it a great honor to personally thank Mila and have her understand my sentiment. Is this so far fetched? The whale saved a human she didnt know. Why? Are not humans the ones that put her in that cage?
Is she trying to be a "trustee?"Admit the thing already. We know squat. But we SHOULD know, should we not? Mila has made a demonstration; leave us not waste it.

Hello Numinant- precondition? This isn't a precondition. This is merely a demonstration of ability that we hope is being paid attention to. We humans vary a great deal in smarts; it's logical to assume whales are no different.
So we're not setting some kind of bar to be surpassed, merely acknowledging instead, that the potential is there and we should recognize that. Yes?
You're reading a bit much into that.

Well, actually the US isn't. Or, at least, it's prohibited.
Japan is another matter. Whether they're hunting this particular species I don't' know. But hunt they are. GreenPeace is having a say in that. They've been harassing the whalers for a good while and are continuing. They have a newly remodeled vessel to use this year. That thing is awesome !! But will this cut down on the Japanese being able to order whale sushi? News at 11.
If they harvest Mila they're going to piss me off.

This is absolutely amazing !! I mean consider ; this whale is in a pen. a prisoner. That the whale could intrepid the onset of panic isn't that surprising, but that the intrepretation would manifest itself into action to save the diver is without parallel. Why did she feel compelled to save the girl? No doubt her jaws could have easily broken the legs, yet they didn't. This was no accident.
Boy we need to do a little more research on these whales. This is just a microscopic bit shy of human behavior. If this whale isn't guilty of a crime, she needs to be let go. At the very least given the opportunity to leave is she wants. My hat is off to Mila.
Free Mila !!! We need her offspring. And we need them to be free.

NOT DESERVING??????? My God Xom what in hell do you need? Here you have an "animal" that humans have put in cage that none the less figured out for herself to save a "human" life," That's called compassion - on the most basic scale one can view it.
