Game Violence Critic Urges Schools to Impose 10-Day Detox of Video Games

A prominent school safety speaker has advocated the imposition of a 10-day moratorium on video game play and television viewing by students, reports the Grand Forks Herald.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, author, retired military man and longtime critic of video game violence, made the remarks during a keynote presentation to North Dakota school officials yesterday.

As he typically does in his speeches, Grossman linked violent video games with school shootings:

"[Grossman] described, in chilling detail, school massacres at Columbine High... the Red Lake Indian Reservation in Minnesota and Virginia Tech. Just as graphically, he conjured the brutality of video games such as “Grand Theft Auto” and “Manhunt.”

Grossman, an expert on school violence, went on to trace a connection between the two, complete with brain scans and a study of juvenile murderers. And he pitched a singular idea to gathered educators – a 10-day television, movie and video game “detox”...

“This is not business as usual,” he said. “This is our world coming unglued. This is our society coming unhinged.”"

---

God, I am so sick of this guy. We have heard time and time again that video games do NOT have causal link to school shootings. The only thing shooters have in common are being white, being male, and not enough parental attention.

The Columbine shooters were mentally and socially unhinged. They used violent games to feed their sick, twisted thoughts, but it certainly didn't cause them to massacre their school mates.

What do Current users think? Are violent video games the bane of childhood or is this guy full of sh*t?

    • I think it's just these kids don't have self-control when it comes to video games. Hell, even I didn't have such control. I'd remember sitting in front of the TV hours upon hours on end just mindlessly playing and staring at whatever violence was on the screen. But I turned out alright, no criminal record or malicious intentions against anyone -.-

But I don't think that it is the game itself that turns kids haywire. It's the lack of control in their lives, bad living environments, bad friends, etc. THAT'S what needs to be monitored and imposed, not the types of games people play these days.

This idea that society is becoming more violent than it used to be is simply not true. It's a pretty ridiculous idea, when you think about America's bloody history.

The Top selling games on Xbox are Halo, GTA, CoD, GoW- all pretty violent. If what Grossman is saying is true, wouldn't there be a huge child-violence epidemic?

As it turns out, violent crime committed by youth is actually down:

Grossman's argument is a moral one based on his personal feelings, not a logical one based on any facts. There is no evidence to support his claims.

    • I think he and everyone like him are full of shit. Violent video games do not create violent children nor do they encourage school shootings. For some reason, it's hard for him and his ilk to see that there was something already "wrong" with the kids who act in such a violent way. Video games are just something they can place the blame on because, God forbid, anyone tell the parents of these kids that they suck as parents and that's why their kid is so fucked in the head. And games like "Manhunt" and "GTA" are rated the way they are for a reason. So, if there was a connection between the games and the violent behavior, who's at fault? Not the child for playing it but the parents for getting it for them just to have something to occupy their kids for a while. And they could also be blamed for the fact that they didn't instill a sense of right and wrong or reality and fantasy in their children.

I've been playing violent video games since forever ago when Mortal Kombat was released on home consoles (I had it for my Game Gear) and I've yet to get into so much as a physical fight. Granted, I have wanted to dismember some people because, you know, people kinda suck and I work retail, but I've never done it. Why? Because I know that's illegal, things that are done in video games aren't real, and I wasn't ignored by both parents while growing up.
