Top 10 reasons to grow your own organic food

I will add one more to these: You hurt sales of Round Up and that is one thing we must do to get glyphosate banned to keep future generations healthier. People in Congress need to read these lists and realize their healthcare plans are only half done if they do not consider the effects of pesticides sprayed on food in the equation.

And if you live in a small apartment and don't have the room for a garden, get in touch with your city council or write a letter to your local paper and try to get a CSA started. You may be suprised at the good reaction you receive about it.

    • It's also fun to grow your own food and very rewarding. I found out I really like radishes and turnips; I don't think I'd even tried them before I grew them. It's been a great experience.

    • Believe me, I understand that. I suppose until you one day can get free of it, you can look up a site called Local Harvest that has a directory of any farmer's markets within a certain mile radius of where you live. I don't know what your situation is like regarding being able to travel, but it might be worth your while once in a while to go as far out as you can away from there to buy from a farmer's market if you have to buy your food.
Here is the site. From the map it looks like there are a fairly good amount of markets around where you live.

    • Cool post, Jan. We desperately need info like this.

But it doesn't work for everyone. Sounds good theoretically,... but I live 3 miles outside Detroit,... in a highly polluted, unhealthy city. My area is nothing but smog, smoke, poisons, litter, acid rain, ungodly numbers of cars, factories, power lines, millions of scavenging critters and everything else that would prohibit me from growing food. I would love to grow my own food, mass compost, et cetera,... but this land is not the kind you wanna live off of.

So, until I leave this crap city in my wake (and it will happen),... I hafta reluctantly buy buy buy my food.

    • These are the top five. The rest are at the link. If you have any to add please do!

      1. GET THE NUTRITION YOU NEED & ENJOY TASTIER FOOD!
Many studies have shown that organically grown food has more minerals and nutrients that we need than food grown with synthetic pesticides. There’s a good reason why many chefs use organic foods in their recipes—they taste better. Organic farming starts with the nourishment of the soil, which eventually leads to the nourishment of the plant and, ultimately our bodies.

      2. SAVE MONEY
Growing your own food can help cut the cost of the grocery bill. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars and month at the grocery store on foods that don’t really nourish you, spend time in the garden, outside, exercising, learning to grow your own food.

      3. PROTECT FUTURE GENERATIONS
The average child receives four times more exposure than an adult to at least eight widely used cancer-causing pesticides in food. Food choices you make now will impact your child’s future health.

“We have not inherited the Earth from our fathers,
we are borrowing it from our children.”
      – Lester Brown

      4. PREVENT SOIL EROSION
The Soil Conservation Service estimates more than 3 billion tons of topsoil are eroded from the United States’ croplands each year. That means soil erodes seven times faster than it’s built up naturally. Soil is the foundation of the food chain in organic farming. However, in conventional farming, the soil is used more as a medium for holding plants in a vertical position so they can be chemically fertilized. As a result, American farms are suffering from the worst soil erosion in history.

      5. PROTECT WATER QUALITY
Water makes up two-thirds of our body mass and covers three-fourths of the planet. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates pesticides - some cancer causing - contaminate the groundwater in 38 states, polluting the primary source of drinking water for more than half the country’s population.
