The inspiring story of a group of middle school kids in Maine who were taught how to be kinder to their fellow classmates. With the aid of the Kindness Center (http://www.thekindnesscenter.com/), the students were encouraged to commit random acts of kindness. Their total for the year was over 3000. In all honesty, the first time I read this article I thought it was incredibly cheesy. After thinking about it, I began to realize that my initial reaction might have something to do with people becoming bitter as they age. I'm not claiming that all old people are cynical, however I have noticed that there is an observable difference in how a lot my friends behaved when we were growing up compared to today. Somebody needs help....they are probably lying and/or trying to steal your money. Community service....sure if it's court ordered. I wonder if work and responsibilities just leave many people too tired to really care about actually helping out(talking about the importance of kindness and acting on one's beliefs are two different things) or if people just become so used to searching for their clique that they ignore the rest of the world and forget how to show compassion for strangers. Maybe it's a cultural issue and people have been conditioned into working solely for one's own prosperity. I kind of wonder if the same sort of workshops these kids were put through could be applied successfully to an older crowd. Odds are they would probably have to pay attendees or get a court order.....or maybe I'm just being too pessimistic
