Using social networks to re-create historic craft

I saw this blog this morning, and it totally blew me away. Social networking often gets a bad rap for being the realm of narcissists and useless information, but this is a great example of what can be done.

A group of knitters on the site Ravelry have re-created the pattern for a lace shawl that was knitted before the turn of the last century based only on a photograph. For non-knitters--Shetland lace is incredibly complicated, and often patterns would be passed along between families and friends and not written down. The fact that this has been re-created is pretty astonishing--and they're planning on making the pattern available to the public free of charge.
