check out the movie, American Drug War, now on Showtime...no question the system has gone to great pains to position itself to be immune from political reconsideration while building these private prioson filled with non-violent offenders.

Chuck look at what prisons are doing to their inmates already. For example in Arkansas a state prison has a plasma center within it's walls that is infecting prisoners with different diseases because they are not using sterile or sanitary techniques;such as reusing the 14 gauge needle that withdraws the blood from your body. Oh and yes the company is owned by the Clinton's. Once I found out I was appalled and totally turned off. Oh and did I mention that on the market 1 bottle of about 873ml of plasma (1 daily donation amt) is worth $1500 but the prisoners are only getting about $5-20 per donation.

ChuckD,
In state run prisons, it's reasonable to see the prisoner's work as compensation of his debt to society, but if corporations use prisoners for work, they should pay them. It's as simple as that. This doesn't rationalize the rest of the system's ills, but at least forcing the issue in this way would keep people from profiting off the prison system. I see a whole lot of perverse incentives in that construction.
